The first LLANDOVERY U3A members’ meeting was held on Wednesday, January 14th 2004, it is a growing organization filling a need in the community. U3A is a learning co-operative of retired or semi-retired people. It enables members to share their knowledge and experience in educational, creative and leisure activities. Here in Llandovery fortnightly meetings are held, where a speaker will talk on subjects as varied as ‘The universe’ ’Hinduism’ or ‘What makes people really happy’
Specialist subject groups include Local History, The Arts and Crafts Movement, Literature, German Conversation, French Conversation. It is hoped a discussion group will meet next term.
Visits to Arts and Craft gardens and houses, museums, Llanfair Church, Llandovery College, The Millennium Arts Centre, Llandaff Cathedral and a cruise around Pembrokeshire Islands have all been much appreciated. Researching subjects is part of the fun of participation and we are now helped by the acquisition of ‘high tech’ aids through a grant from ‘Awards for all’.
