Winchcombe leaves very happy memories of my childhood before, during and after WW2. Although the village was visited first of all by British Troops, then by American Troops and Italian then German POW's it remained untouched by the war except for the odd stray bomb(s) in the surrounding countryside.
My father was the local Police Sergeant and we lived in the Police Station on the corner of North Street and Greet Road. I attended Cheltenham Grammar School which was a 7 mile journey by train on which many 'high jinks' took place including broken windows!
On leaving school, I worked as a clerk on the railway, firstly at Winchcombe Station then at Honeybourne.
After about 3 years on the railway I was called up for service in the army having failed to get into the RAF aircrew because of a slight colour deficiency in my eyesight. I saw service in India, Ceylon and Malaya eventually being demobbed in December 1947 when I joined Gloucestershire Police later transferring to Wilsthire on promotion to Inspector.
I continued serving in the Wiltshire Police as Office Manager until 1992 when I finally retired and am now living with my wife at Bourton, a small village about 6 miles from Swindon, our three children and their families all live within a five mile radius - life could be a lot worse!
