I was living with my mother and father in the small town of Whitley Bay a small village on the North East coast of England at the start of the war and I will always remember the 3rd of September 1939 I was walking along Holmwood Road with my mother when the siren or bells started up, I dont know why but both my mother and I started to run back to the house in Mitchell Avenue, one lady in the street was running about with a dust bin lid on her head she was very frightened. Nothing of course happeng but at least the war had started, which looking back I think was a relief to many people.
My father decided after a few months, that we should leave the coast in case of air raids. With that my mother and I went to stay at a little country village In Cumberland called Little Corby. The war still had not really started and my mother was getting fed up with country life,I was only seven years of age in 1939 and was missing my schooling in Whitley Bay so we decided to return to Whitley Bay, it was not long after that that the bombs began to fall. The Luftwaffe were making attacks on the Tyne, with many not getting past the A.A.Guns along the coast between, so they were dropping their bombs on Whitley Bay and Tynemouth and some
on South Shields on that raid I can remember seeing the sky alight from Whitley Bay.Many bombs
were droped on Whitley during this period it was perhaps about 1941/1942.Our house was damaged from bombs several times including the front door which was all glass it was blown down the passage way and was not replaced in its original state until after the war by the war damage commission
