I was a small boy during the war. My family lived in South Norwood SE25. My earliest memory is of being carried down to the air raid shelter in our back garden and seeing and hearing black shapes in the sky. My grandparents left the area and returned to Sussex shortly after the Blitz started. I spent much of the war years with my grandparents in Lewes Sussex. I have many memories of those years. In particular watching aircraft flying through the gap between where my grandparents lived and Cliffe Hill the opposite side of the Lewes gap. I can remember Spitfires chasing after the V1 bombs and in one case catching and tipping the bomb so that it crashed and exploded shortly after. The sound of a V1 engine still causes the hairs on the back of my neck to rise. This led to lifelong interest in aviation. As a result I spent my working life within the aviation industry.
