RadiOlympia – the first ´óÏó´«Ã½ entertainment programme 85 years ago

Our gallery of images reveals what went on behind the scenes at the first entertainment programme on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Television.

Image: RadiOlympia – the industry event was a major fixture throughout the 1920s and 30s until the outbreak of World War II.

The 1936 Radio Show at Olympia was launched on Wednesday 26th August 1936 - it was the eleventh big radio exhibition put on by the Radio Manufacturers' Association of the UK.

1936 saw the first major presence of television manufacturers on the stands, but because there were no programmes the sets were not selling. Soon the ´óÏó´«Ã½ found itself coming under pressure to provide demonstration transmissions during August.

What emerged was 'Here's Looking at You' - a variety programme, hastily arranged by the ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s first TV producer Cecil Madden. It went out twice a day for two weeks, across the two competing television systems that were being trialled at Alexandra Palace.

Our gallery takes you behind the scenes to reveal rarely seen images of the programme in production, plus the original running order of the items on the show.
