Feature:		Stone-effect painted walls

Decorate your room in medieval style with inspiration from a great banqueting hall. Wood panelling, stone-effect walls, deep red furnishings and old railway sleepers all help to take you back in time.

		Central feature Make your chimneybreast stand out by painting it a deep red colour. Enhance by painting the walls either side of it an off-white colour. Make a fire surround from a dark oak wax stained railway sleeper. Decorate with church candles.
		Window dressing Make a feature of the window by dressing it with curtains made from a tapestry fabric. Add to this Gothic theme with an elaborate pelmet of wood-effect foam.
		Wood panelling Clad the walls with plywood from floor to dado height and mount 4"x1" timber over the top to create panelling. To get the medieval feel, stain it darker by rubbing in dark oak wax.
		Period wall effects To create the effect of stonewalls, paint the walls an off-white colour, and then use masking fluid to mark out large blocks. Sponge darker colour paint with acrylic classic colour glaze over the top, and peel away the masking.
		Tapestry No medieval room would be complete without a tapestry on the wall. Try hanging tapestry fabric on the wall and dress it with some studded wrought iron chain.
		Coffee table To create some Gothic style furniture, try cladding your existing coffee table with scaffolding planks stained with the dark oak wax. Add to the effect by screwing hand-forged studs into the top.
		Celtic storage Store CDs and videos in a second hand chest. Stain it in dark oak and attach wrought iron gate hinges to the top. Copy a Celtic knot design in dark paint that will look as if it has been scorched on, and finish the look with more studs.
		Sofa Hide more modern furniture such as the sofa with big throws. Try red velvet to match the medieval colours and style.
