Designer: Gordon Whistance;
Feature: Medieval shutters
Transform your living room into a Tudor themed room. Blue walls, pointed arches, pewter decoration and a medieval candelabra create a fantastic period style room.

The Tudor period has a transitional style, caught between Gothic and Palladian. Manor houses were built for trading or wealthy families. They had oak-panelled interiors and an increased amount of furniture compared to past styles.

Colour scheme
Create simple panels on the walls by fixing 2x1 batons in rectangular patterns on the walls. Paint pale blue. Paint the area above the fireplace a darker shade of blue. Woodwork can also be picked out in the darker colour.
Shelves
Shelves
Make open shelving units to display pewter objects and service ware. For dramatic effect, set the shelves into the wall. This effect can be achieved by simply building the wall out with MDF panels.
High backed chair
Seating
Invest in Tudor style furniture. Look for authentic carved or panelled, high-backed chairs, such as the "gossip chair," with trapezoid seat and wide arms to accommodate the full-skirted Tudor ladies. A red sofa provides comfy seating in the room.
Furniture
Furniture
Select traditional-looking pieces of oak, walnut, chestnut or beech with Tudor touches, such as carved chests with wrought iron studs and hinges. The gothic pointed arch also features strongly in Tudor designs.
Window blinds
Blinds
Make crisscross blinds at the window. Make blinds from MDF. In the centre of each cut a narrow rectangle. Attach a wire grid so that the squares run diagonally. Paint the blind to match the walls.
Curtains
Curtains
Hang curtains at the window to soften the look and help block out the winter drafts. Add detail to plain cream curtains by inserting a strip of blue patterned fabric half way up.
Candelabra
Lighting
In addition to electrical lighting, position a large candelabra in the corner of the room. The more candles the better in this Tudor design.
Tudor spearheads
Medieval accessories
Complete the look by placing Mediaeval decoration around the room. Coats of armour, or Tudor spearheads suit the design perfectly.
