听 Background to the hymn
| Amazing Grace composer John Newton |
John Newton was a reformed slave trader and slave ship captain. Although he wrote the hymn whilst still having dealings in the slave trade he spoke out against it in later life and became an abolitionist.
Newton wrote up his eyewitness accounts of the appalling conditions in which enslaved Africans were held on board ships during the middle passage. He gave this evidence to William Wilberforce and encouraged him to use it in his parliamentary fight to get the slave trade abolished.听
The song is believed to have been written for New Year's Day 1773. The lyrics are by Newton but the music is based on a traditional folk tune. Recorded by a host of musicians from Elvis Presley to Christine Aguilera, Amazing Grace has become a symbol of hope and redemption. The song has been adopted by civil rights campaigners as a rallying call to freedom.
Amongst the long list of artists who have recorded the song are; Aretha Franklin, Bryan Ferry, Charlotte Church, Destiny鈥檚 Child, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart, Sinead O鈥機onnor and the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards; who had a number one hit in the UK charts in 1971.
