BEDLINGTON MINERS' PICNIC

John Gibson in 1960

Muck and brass

John Gibson recalls how the miners' picnic was a huge day for everyone in Bedlington. The whole town would come out to listen to the political speakers and the brass bands. There were prizes for the smartest uniform, best band and best soloists. Prizes included tankards, a wristwatch for best trombone and a roseball and canteen of cutlery for the best euphonium of the day.
