Extreme Sport Arena

Should there be an Extreme Sport Arena on the Waterfront or at Fort Regent?

Skateboarding in Jersey
Skateboarding in Jersey

鈥淣ot on my Doorstep鈥 is a phrase you hear anytime you mention teenagers, skate boarding, Parkour, rollerblading or in fact anything anyone enjoys that might make a bit of noise or seem anti-social.

The latest suggestion for a skateboard park location is Peoples Park in St Helier, but that raised the usual response of 鈥淚t鈥檚 too noisy鈥, 鈥淲hat about the OAP鈥檚鈥 and of course, the classic, 鈥淣ot on my Doorstep鈥.

Biking

The problem is, wherever they put it there will be complaints from at least one group of our varied society, and that may include the skateboarders themselves. If a park is put in St Helier should people from St Brelade have to come into town to skate?

One idea put forward is to build an extreme sport arena on the Waterfront, a place for Skate boarding, Rollerblading, Parkour, Trampoline, Rock Climbing and anything else that needs a home in the island.

You could even turn Fort Regent into a sport centre for minority and emerging sports if space can't be found on the Waterfront.

What do you think?

Rollerblading
Rollerblading

What do you think, would it better to have a large arena for all types of extreme sport or should different sports be available at different parts of the island?

Should St Brelade AND St Helier have a Skate park as well as a place to practice Parkour and other sports?

Would it be better for Fort Regent to be adapted to suit the purpose or would it better to build from scratch on the Waterfront?

If you think separate parks should be built where in the island is the best location for them, is Peoples Park ideal or a really bad idea?

Proposal Backed

Plans for a skate park in Jersey's People's Park will go ahead, following a vote at a parish assembly. Fifty three people at the meeting in the Town Hall voted in favour of the plans, compared to 37 against.

It means part of the land in the south west corner of the park will be converted for use by skateboarders and BMX bike riders.

Local residents group, the Friends of People's Park, says it remains opposed to the plans.

Town Constable Simon Crowcroft, says measures are being put in place to dispel some of their concerns.

"There was obviously a lot of discussion and quite a lot of opposition to it by people who came to say they didn't oppose skateboarding but they didn't want it there and I think the case was well made by the young people," he said.

Rushed through

"Their message was if you really want skateboarding to be done in a place like this rather than all over town then you have to support it here, because it isn't going to happen anywhere else."

But Dee Shrives from the Friends of People's Park says she is not convinced and is extremely disappointed with Constable Crowcroft.

"He seems to be flying the banner of youth of the island but I'm sorry, I don't think 100 skateboarders represent the youth of the island," she said.

"Our constable seems to be ageist. He didn't care a toss about the old people who live next to the park, it seems it's all just been rushed through."

I come to Jersey on holiday,I think that a skate park would be a great idea because it's another place that kids can go to keep off the streets. My mum says it's a good form of exercise and we get lots of fresh air! Skateboarding should be promoted more.

charlie
Please please please build a skatepark, because there is no where to skate in jersey, you always get told to move on if you try n skate anywhere. please build one :) kids need somewhere to go

pawyly

Skateparks and Rollerblading and a skating rink for serious skaters etc would be fun Parkour and BMX BIKES and Moto cross and trampoling WUD B Great for all Children/Teenagers Enjoyment and Entertainment for theyoungsters in Liberation Square/Waterfront. The Skating is superb lets have more entertainment PLEEASSE

Skateparks in England are coming up with the Same layouts everywhere. It is VERY hard to find a skatepark in england that has an 'Interesting' Layout. Grinding is becoming a large percentage of Extreme sports and of the-top of my head i can think of a Mere 3 Skateparks wich have a set of stairs - or a Handrail. I Also think that Cast-Iron ledges should be baned and Coping should replace it.

eddie bangle
in the water front its closer

blading idiot
i think that skate parks shold be built more in europe (spain, england, france) i have to take 3 buses to get to a skatepark and its not that good

simone
a sports park extreme activity centre sounds like a lovely idea for rollerblading biking and running somewhere that could keep kids occupied busy and out of trouble would be good and be ideally placed where it is accessible easy to get to for all and be great to get people teenagers etc fitter healthier and more active

Simone Wearne
I think an ice skating rink would be great but i also have to agree with Sergio

Simone Wearne
I agree with Sergio

sergio
i think we should get a prk in the cumberland county in vineland to keep those young interesyed in bikeing focused away from the bad things. It would ditsance those bad kids from the good kids .and i have someone interestd in finfing a donation for a track operator . we have the space in a north vineland

Pacman
ok, for starters, i hate to break it to you "Sqn Leader C Gull" but spelling and grammer is not important, None of the people's posts you edited couldve been that bad because you were able to correct them, next of all, a new skatepark WILL NOT HELP KEEP KIDS OFF THE STREET, because it is not skaters. bmx'ers and skateboarders that are causing the trouble , i think youll find its the kids who hang around in gangs outside the shops etc that are to blame for street crime and that are to blame for me and my friends only leaving the house when absolutley neccesary, open your eyes people, its easy just look around. Peace out

dom
skateboarding, blading and bmx is wicked bob your a prick.

bob junson
skate,bmx is crap

lauren
i think a sports arena would be good as it might keep young teenagers off the streeets and keep them out of trouble. it would be enjoyable if made for all the family with different activites and clubs a bit like the old fort Regent but a lot modern and better

rosie
yes i agree there should be an extreame park for the kids, also an ice skating rink for everybody.whether it should be put on the waterfront or somewhere else, i don,t know.by the way ,who decided to call the area castle quay? i,ts a harbour down there, not a little quay.

ko jo ha
do u have rails

Sqn Leader C Gull
After reviewing some of these messages, especially those from the younger element, I would be inclined to say that the money should be spent on after school English lessons. Perhaps they could channel their energy into learning about punctuation and grammar, rather than mincing about on pieces of wood with wheels underneath.

samuel satchel
do it

danny
ban it now therre a waste of space they have alreadyu got loads

alex
i am going to jersey soon is there even a skateboard park there already????

David Jones#1
I think there should be a skate arena because people who bike, skateboard, and rollerblade cant play the sport they want, and the people who play football, basketball, and golf get to play the sport's they enjoy.

jake
how can you get moto bikes.

lar
im travelling to jersey very soon and i was wondering if there was anywhere to pick up some reasonably priced aggresive roller blades? ( USD or Razors preferably ).

An old Man
They should build it a west Park, as skating is fun and should be free. And Parks are free. Don't build an Extreme park where we have to pay to be regulated. Born to be FREE. Or just keep skating in Town

Anthony
Just remember a Park is for Fun and Laughs. And skating and BMXing is Fun which should be done in a park, Where parents can watch their kids have fun. You don't need at team to skate like you need to play Footie, and not everyone is a TEAM player. Just build a park designed by the people who will use it ! No more steam clocks or Bronze trees

david
if people don鈥檛 want a skate park, stop complaining and calling the police when people are skating and riding through town.

Joozey
well johnny, i dunno where u can get cheap decks from... but if you can get your hands on a blank deck, i make custom designs to a high standard if your interested...

Ali and Steph
If teens had a place to hang around or muck about then it would keep them away from corners and carparks or huddling in town together-frightening tourists and locals so we think that they should build more amusement for teens so bring on the skatepark dudes!

johnny a-b
i think that it would be good to have a new bigger skatepark but i am really finding it difficult to lay my hands on a cheap skateboard! does anyone know any good sites?

Joozey
my friends! let us not get to the extreme of violence. may our rational behavior be what brings us together as a great and prosporus Island!

Brigadier Mills
My fine Sqn Leader C Gull , clip those feathers of yours before the youths cull you forever, I hope for one when the extreme sports arena is built, they will shoot you down like meschescmhits.

Joozey
IM A CADET!!! WOOO GO ME!!!

Sqn Leader C Gull
My dear Brigadier. Naturally as a lowly Squadron Leader I would salute someone of higher stature and until I achieve the rank of Air Commodore I will bow to your superior rank. However, the use of the word 鈥渂easting鈥 normally would associate that person with someone of, how should we say, more ground level 鈥 perhaps heaven forbid naval ? My dear Sir, surely you are not impersonating a higher rank ? This carries quite considerable punishments you know. The long haired oiks will make fine pooping targets as they gather, slack jawed at their new playground. Like, whatever, dude ! As to you, my arch enemy Mr Claus 鈥 should you not be resting? You only come once a year and that鈥檚 down a chimney so you had better get some sleep. Only 275 days until Christmas Eve my friend.

Joozey
WAHEY!!! that was a great result! powere to the youths!!! however, there are still matters that it needs property planning, funding, designing, BUILDING... we could still be made to wait several years my friands...

george rylance
ITS BEEN APPROVED!!!

Santa Claus
C Gull, you know the score... Santa's goin'a come to town and blast u away to kingdom come. Yeah baby!

Dave
Putting it up at waterfront is ideal as this is the home to surfing as well. Combine all extreme sports in one place!

Brigadier Mills
Sqn Leader C Gull, I hope all the youths that are involved with this subject will debag and beast you big time. Now salute your superior, otherwise I'll hand out some extreme sports on you.

JDA
They should build ti without a doubt, the kids get severally criticised for hanging round the parks, liberation square, town, well what else are they supposed to do, they have absoultly no-where, so don't be so quik to jump on their cases, give them somewhere to go and do like skating etc!!! Etc!! And they won't be so much trouble.

When i was younger we had places to go the the youth clubs, play clubs, etc!! But what do the children of today have nothing!!!! And i think it is disgusting.

So the states of jersey do something useful with "our" money instead of spending it on sculptors that we don't need, wake up and smell the roses for god's sake.

Joel Docherty
Yes that would be great I holiday every year to Jersey I am 7 years old and love the trampolines and skateboarding park.. Its great for kids in jersey there is plenty of activies to do...

Hector McDonald
i think that there should be one large indoor complex that all common extreme sports can be done like rollerblading skateboarding, bmx, even moto cross could take place.

This is a good idea because "A" it would cut out the noise "B" it can attract other people to the island.

I think that the fort should be used as it is big enough and would provide plentyful space for all extreme sports, and coming from a skateboarding point of view it would keep the skaters from wrecking walls and statues. so in my view BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT!!

Joozey
I must agree with Mad Maz, Parkour is a very demanding sport... Although i must also say sports such as skateboarding and blading also offer thier own individual high lights. You can not say a sport is bad and the people who do it are collectively "Nerds" because they enjoy what they are doing as much as others enjoy what they are doing. But as for the building of extreme sports areas... I say go for it! Use fort regent for a new extreme sports arena, but also i believe there should be an gymnasium for PK use. I have heard it time and time again on forums "we need somewhere to practice" "safe enviroments" well, lets try and aim for one!!! PS, i also go to ATC... i see a pattern emerging...

I think we should.....
Build it! Build it! Build it!

DJ Higster
I think it would be such a gooooood idea to build an extreme sports area at the front coz not only will it give us teenagers something to do it will also stop lil boys (and girls) smacking into us on their bikes/skates while we walk round town!!!

I agree with Timmy!! But....i dont understand what the big thing is about St.Brealades it would only take about 20 mins for them to come into town!!!

Lazy buggers if you go and build on out their just coz they cant be arsed to go into town (hey! they could even bike/skate there) haha! O and Mr.Bird dude (C Gull) what u on about Longhaired louts!! Thanks!!! PLEASE build an extreme sports area!!!!

Sqn Leader C Gull
For Pk Mad Maz, I must apologise for seeming rash and tarnishing you young ruffians with the same brush. I hope you understand that it was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment. Not that I have a very big tongue, or any cheeks as a matter of fact -because, of course, I am a bird.

Timmy T
I could move through the urban surrounding with compromising speed - its called walking down the highstreet!

Pk Mad Maz
ok i really have to disagree with timmy there are to thre thoughts about parkour there are people who dont understand it and think its kool, there people who dont understand it and dont bother too so they diss it, and there are traceurs themselves like me.

Parkour is much more than just jumping ova a box or railing and sayin o yeh man i can do parkour the aim to parkour is to be able to have perfect flow (the ability to move thru and urban surrounding with comprimising speed) and to do this you need to be agile, fit, have good balance and be able to keep up with the disipline which is what it is its a disipline but back to the subject i think you cant really build somewhere for parkour, because parkour is everywhere it cant be constricted to one place.

so i think the best thing to do would be yeh build a skate park or rollerblading park and bmx park because they need things like ramps and things but just give us Tracuers some rails a few rooftops some small gaps and precision for beginers and low wallas and high walls it would be ideal and some nice runs would be apreciated.

just one more thing i can see where Sqn Leader C gull is coming from but i think too many teenagers are being *tarnished with the same brush* so to speak and only a small majority are like that so please reconsider calling us all *longhaired louts* and maybe get to know a few of us you might be pleasently surprised. P.S. im a cadet in the ATC so think again about us not doing anything useful. thanks :D

Timmy T
Because parkour is for nerds who cant afford blades or a skateboard! Its so much easier to land on your feet than on wheels. Parkour is like learning to ride a bike with training wheels, its so easy!

Sqn Leader C Gull
Nowhere. Those long haired louts should be working, not gaying around on girlie roller skates.

Poli
if its extreme sports then why would u be bannin parkour? just for the record parkour is awesome

Timmy T
As long as we can ban the parkour nerds from being anywhere near it then I am all for it! Skating and boarding rulz ok!

Anon
Would be a good idea, it will keep the little brats out of town.

Rory de Carteret
I think there should be a extreme sports areana built at the waterfront because that is much handier because you can go into town and then go have some fun at the skatepark. Also they should make it free or pretty cheap because us teenagers cant afford to go to the skateboard loads if its costing us 5 pound or even 4 pound because we dont have much money

anon
do it now!!!!
