The Veras! A name with a nice ring to it, a beautiful insidious grower that will be chanted by crowds wanting more or a sly nod to a non too ambiguous tune extolling the virtues of chemical enhancement?

Nathan - The Veras
Nathan (Ben Smith/sitdap.com)

All great music comes from the outposts, the musical and stylistic boundaries, those grey areas where questions are asked and pre-conceptions riotously challenged. The Veras are no exception.

Page and Plant, Strummer and Jones, Carl and Pete, de Datsun, Bowie and the Glimmer Twins, Nathan (vocals, lead guitar), Paul (vocals, guitar), Ryan (Bass) and Owen (Drums) are influenced by all of these without sounding derivatively like any of them.

Taking a certain guerrilla gigging spirit, magpie like flitting, glam showmanship and rimal urgency from their idols, in the tight Veras unit a kaleidoscope of ideas comes ogether to create something uniquely rock n鈥 roll.

Owen - The Veras
Owen (Ben Smith/sitdap.com)

It鈥檚 a reflection not a cosmic recreation of their record collections. Put out in 2004, Cinderella鈥 and 鈥楽ong for Your Girl鈥, tracks with a groove, ball breaking rock n鈥 roll, reated a real stir, and now The Veras are back with three new stunning tracks that emand your attention.

Live favourite 鈥楽hades of Make Up鈥 sits confidently alongside the jagged punk-funk-rock explosion that is a little bit 鈥楻ogue鈥 before it all gets a bit low down and scuzzy with 鈥楾he Scene鈥, prime time BRMC with a Scream Team groove.

Interview

Describe your style of music, who do you sound like?
Our sound is very raw and catchy riff driven. We always like people to
have there own opinion on us as we would not liked to be pidgeon holed.
People have said we are like a heavier libs.

What are your main musical influences?
led zep, rolling stones, the who, Beatles, libertines, velvet underground.

"WE would say we have all been influenced and inspired by led zeppelin. They were such a diverse band."
The Veras

WE would say we have all been influenced and inspired by led zeppelin. They were such a diverse band.

They could go from songs like Whole Lotta Love to say a reall mellow song like The rain song.

What/Who have been your biggest influences in life and on your lyrics?
We like to consider such elements within our writing. We hate to see live bands with songs that sound all the same and you don't know when the song has changed. As far as the lyrics for our songs go, they are written about experiences and day to day
tasks.

Who is your favourite band of the moment, what's in your CD player?
paul 鈥 the bravery and velvet underground
ryan - robert jonson
owen - cinematic orchestra, queens of the stone age
nathan - whatevers on my ipod. but for new bands i would have to say that i'm really into the killers at the minute and razorlight.

Paul - The Veras
Paul (Ben Smith/sitdap.com)

What are your feelings on peer 2 peer downloading of songs, do you see it as a good way of getting exposure or pure theft?
its theft for signed artists as its there living, but great for new bands who need as much exposure as possible.

Downloading songs is all well and good but its nice to have the proper CD and booklet to go with it.

Especially now a lot of bands are releasing limited edition stuff, you feel part of a club.

We have tracks available to download on the website and we want as many people to download them.

How did you meet?
We met via a local based internet review site. There was an advert from
paul (guitarist) requesting to start a band.

Nathan(vocals/guitar) wanted to leave his previous band and get involved in something else.

Paul knew Owen (Drummer) from university and Nathan knew Ryan(bass) from his previous band.

A practice session was arranged after a meeting in a local boozer on a sunny afternoon. It basically went from there. Although Nathan was never ment to sing and after many people auditioning it was decided that his temporary vocals would become the main voice of the band.

Is there an interesting story behind the name or did you choose it because you thought it would sound good?
We were just looking for names that would suit the style of music we were
playing. We started with the valetines but then decided on the veras due to
another band in america being called the valentines.

Ryan - The Veras
Ryan (Ben Smith/sitdap.com)

Big or small? Would you prefer to play a packed festival in front of thousands or a small pup full of fanatical music fans?
Its a tough one, playing in front of a packed festival is a dream of every band. So yeah this would be immense.

But we played a gig in a very small pub (The caledonia) which was so full people were out the doors.

Crowd surfing was going on people jumping on an already small enough stage, but it felt so good as it was very intimate.

But we want to experience a bigger crowd than 400 people (the biggest crowd to date, liverpool academy 2).

Next we are treated to a band that have travelled down from Liverpool to entertain the people of Newport . The Veras, did more than entertain, they helped to make the second night of the Guilty Party a night we will never be able to forget. The reason we had for putting these nights on, was to give new bands a venue to play in, give people an opportunity to witness new exciting bands before they take over the pop charts, the Veras were everything and more we could have asked for in a band to be playing these nights. They have songs that make you stop whatever it was you were doing, and give them the attention they deserve. Songs that draw comparisons to The Strokes, The Libertines, The Clash, but with a sound that is original and distinctive. This is a band that is definatley going places. Twelve months from now they will have achieved chart success, and if you were one of the lucky ones at the NCLA on Friday 28/10/2005 you will really be able to say 鈥淚 saw them first鈥.
