Shetland Shock to End

The 2005 Island Games ended with the biggest shock in island games football history - plus news from the rest of Day 6.

Delight as Shetland take the lead over Guernsey
Delight as Shetland take the lead

It was at exactly ten to six yesterday evening when a huge cheer drifted right across this quaint capital town of Lerwick - it seemed to last forever -and signalled the end of a football match where little Shetland; population of 23,000, and never before finishing higher than 7th in any previous Games, had beaten the current holders Guernsey 2-0.

What celebrations followed. On the streets, policemen, stewards, St. John Ambulance personnel all literally jumped up and down and hugged each other as they listened to the commentary supplied by 大象传媒 Jersey and Guernsey.

TABLE TENNIS

Eugene Ellis and Paul Marshall have won gold in the men's doubles - they beat Craig Christie and Igor Kubelka of Shetland听 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.

ATHLETICS

In the womens half marathon, Lisa Fox has won a silver medal, finishing just two seconds behind the winner Joanna Walker from Orkney.

"Went for gold but silver's good enough for me - never thought I'd do that 'cause I looked at the course yesterday; saw all those hills and thought no way am I going to do this-听 but it just went really well actually - got to the last sort of 3K and just gave it my best shot! Exhausted now and deserve a good big drink 'cause it's been ages since I had one!"

And the team of Lisa, Carol Knight and Kerry Petulla were awarded the team gold.

No luck for our men in the half marathon. Nick Le Cocq was highest Jersey competitor, coming home in a time of 1.18.45, seven minutes behind the winner Michael Sanchez of Gibraltar. Steve Dawes of Guernsey won the bronze.

Well done to Paul Dingle who gained a silver medal in the Triple Jump, with a leap of 13.89, just 10cms away from the gold.

And there was another silver, this time for our ladies 4 x 400 relay team, just squeezing out Orkney into third place. Our men just missed out on a medal in their 4 x 400, finishing fourth.

SQUASH

In the mixed doubles, Kate Cadigan and Paul Frankland听 won gold in the mixed doubles, beating Bermuda's Nicholas Kyne and Liz Martin 15-10 15-9.

And it was a bronze medal to Ronnie Jubb and Adele Kapp, as they beat Jan Leask and Joan Smith of Shetland 2-1.

Staying with squash, the men's doubles pairing of Paul Frankland and Mark Le Roux have been been beaten by Bermuda's Nicholas Kyme and James Stout in the mens doubles final 2-1 - so they take the silver and complete a very successful week for our squash players.

CYCLING

And so to the very last event of the whole week - the cycling criterium around the streets of Lerwick - For 32-year old Sam Firby it was silver once again, behind Mark Kelly from the Isle of Man.

But a great ride to move into second place in the home straight.

It's always nice to get a medal and I thought I've had quite good form with these games - thought I was in with a chance. It would be nice to get gold but I'll take silver any day."
