Old JCG building at La Pouquelaye

Old JCG Building

Old JCG Building

Plans have been revealed to turn one of Jersey’s most recognisable landmarks into a series of flats and houses. We went to see what it looks like inside the old JCG school building before it’s too late.

The old Jersey College for Girls building at La Pouquelaye is probably one of the most identifiable buildings in the island. Plans have been revealed this week to turn it into 49 apartments and 9 town houses.

The school was founded as Jersey Ladies’ College in 1880 in a house in Roussel Street and moved into the La Pouquelaye building in 1888, which served the school well for over 100 years.

Vandals have destroyed much of the building

Vandalism has taken it's toll on the building

The building, which was used as a hospital by the Germans in WWII, functioned as a school until the girls moved into their new premises opposite Victoria College in 1999.

Thanks to its memorable appearance the façade of the building has been listed as a site of special interest, and as such must remain as it is and become an integral part of the redevelopment.

After JCG vacated the school it was used temporarily by Grands Vaux primary school whilst they were having their own school rebuilt for them.

Since then the Jersey Instrumental Service has been using it for music practice, and some school holiday play schemes have made use of the premises, but the building has largely remained empty.

The kitchen has suffered from neglect

Much of the school has suffered from neglect

Since it stopped being used full time the building has fallen into a state of disrepair thanks to a combination of vandalism and neglect.

Before this piece of island history changes forever we decided to take a look inside the school to remember what it was like in it’s former days of glory. Chairman of the Old Girl's Association, Margaret Stone, who was both a pupil and a teacher at JCG, gave us a tour around some of the older areas of the school.

We’d love to hear from you about your time inside the former JCG building, whether you were a pupil, teacher or just a visitor to the school share your memories with others…

I was a student at JCG from 2982-1990 and have many fond memories of school there. It is a wonderful building and such a shame that it has fallen into such as state since it was vacated. I looked into the histroy in detil whilst studying history at school and there is a fascinating history to the school. I no longer live in the island and will be quite sad when the building is no more.

As a teenager myself i agree that there isnt alot for us kids to do in jersey that doesnt involve large amounts of money.I used to go to the school for a few years while my other school was being re built and we would often find syringes and glass everywhere on the grass where we were playing!!!!!

Michelle
They have already ruined jersey. there is nothing to do for teenagers and everything is expensive. everything gets turned into flats and offices and it's becoming something nobody wants it to be like

Charlotte
As i am a student of jcg at the present year, i think the buliding should not be knocked down because people have many memories there

Nick
Does the island not benefit from UK lottery funding now? Why not at least look into getting some funds to help fund its regeneration. Better still what about getting on the bbc's 'Restoration' programme in the Autumn. The winner gets a huge grant.

It´s not that they wouldn´t have some other space left on Jersey for new townhouses and apartments...but at least they could use it for loft apartments, so they wouldn´t have to tear down the beautyful building..?

sophie
i think the school shud be destroyed its a wreck anyway

Dianne Proctor (nee Filsell)
As a former pupil of the school, I was devastated when a friend sent me a picture of the School today. I tend to agree with Emilie that it should continue to be used for the youth of Jersey and be properly maintained for its heritage value

Kayleigh
I was taught in the JCG building myself. It is a beautiful building and is being destroyed by vandals. We need to restore its natural beauty and not get rid of it in exchange for more useless flats. I agree Emilie.

Emilie
Personally I think that the old JCG building should be left as it is. The Instrumental Service are using the building for something useful and benificial to the community. Myself and many others I know have really benefited from the use of this building, shouldn't more young people get the oppertunity also? And do we really need any more empty flats?
