Ma Normandie

The States are looking for an official Jersey anthem, and are looking for you to make suggestions.

At the moment the semi-official song for Jersey (the one that would have been played at the medal ceremony if Jersey had won a gold at the Commonwealth Games) is called Ma Normandie.

Although the song is traditionally sung in Jerriase the English translation is as follows:

When everything is reborn in hope听
And winter flees far from us,听
Under the beautiful sky of our France,听
When the the sun returns gentler,听
When nature has turned green again,听
When the swallow has returned,听
I like to see once more my Normandy,听
It鈥檚 the country where I saw the light of day.听

I鈥檝e seen the fields of Helvetia,听
And its chalets and its glaciers,听
I鈥檝e seen the sky of Italy,听
And Venice and its gondoliers.听
Greeting each homeland,听
I told myself that no stay听
Is finer than my Normandy,听
It鈥檚 the country where I saw the light of day.听

There comes a time of life,听
When every dream must finish,听
A time when the restful spirit听
Needs to remember.听
When my chilled muse听
Makes its way back to the past,听
I鈥檒l go see once more my Normandy,听
It鈥檚 the country where I saw the light of day.

What do you think of Ma Normandie? Is it a good anthem for the island? Should the lyrics be changed to better suit our needs or should it stay as it is because of the islands historic links with Normandie?

Or do you prefer Island Home by Gerard le Feuvre - the track selected as the 'official' choice for Jersey's new National Anthem?

Iam one of those Jersey people who has a stamp in her passport that says I am not free to work in an EU country without a permit. I would like to see Ma Normandie as the national anthem for Jersey because it identifies our roots. I feel that the other five options are altogether uninspiring.

Yvonne Bullen
Why was this beautiful song not included in the shortlist as it has been used at Island games and competitions and is part of our history and roots. How much is this non event costing the Island?

ummmmm
lets go surfing by ldmh... yeaaaah!

WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED TO THE OLD JERSEY ANTHEM----THE FLAG THAT MAKES US FREE--IN OUR DEAR ISLAND OF JERSEY

Why not simply keep your anthem in J猫rriais ? Are you ashamed of your own language, history and culture ? Do not make the same mistake as most French people do stupidly submitting to franglais just because they believe it's more fashionable to look and sound American than French. A pitty the original version of your anthem in J猫rriais is no displayed on this page ! Keep J猫rriais and "Ma Normandie" alive !

Rosie
Hedley of course

Ian
I think it should be a new song in composed in J猫rriais. Obviously not French anymore, but changing to English seems too submissive, because Jersey isn't part of the UK. If people really want it in English, okay, but NOT God Save the Queen.

Sue Hartman
A. > is incorrect. Should say > [Google B茅rat]

B. > ne se traduit pas "It鈥檚 the country where I saw the light of day."

Substitute any of these: It's the country where I was born.

It's the country where I first saw the light of day.

It's the country of my birth.

I'ts the country that gave me life.

Andy
I'm living in Jersey at the moment and the Jersey brand can be summed up as follows; narrow mindedness and bigotry in shocking proportions. I also find their attitude towards England as offensive. The Island breeds a certain mediocrity.

Anyone with any ambition whatsoever leaves and moves to England. Therefore, the Island is populated by has beens and those that cannot or have been unable to make it in England. They console themselves with the fact they have a beach and there is some nice scenery.

I think Jersey people should remind themselves when they slag off England that the English economy feeds their easy lifestyle and they should show a little respect to us when we visit. They should also keep their flag waving and Jersey brand to themselves. Nobody in their right mind wants it.

Steve
Quennevais Girls!! - Sgt Pippon, i mean Proud to be a bean!

Flo
I agree - it has to be Proud to be a Bean by Sergeant Pipon - no other song will do!

Ross Barnes
'Proud to be a bean!' by Sergeant pipons lonely hearts club band!!

Jeremy Ma莽on
Why don't we use the English version of Ma Normandy and change France and Normandy to Jersey and Country to Island, national anthems don't have to rhyme.I think the light of day line is really poetic and has deep meaning.

!-x-!-emma-!-x-!

Bah! 'Beautiful Jersey' is pretty, platitudinous rubbish. 'Ma Normandie' has more soul but it's inescapably about somewhere else. 'Jersey mon vie' is, sadly, a very accurate portrayal of what island life is like nowadays although you can't expect them to accept it as an anthem. We need something stirring for when we lose the Island Games.

James
I think it should have it's own anthem. What's all this stupidity about that people like the ties with Britain? There is no Britain anymore. Scotland and Wales will be independant soon; (and hopefully Northern Ireland and Cornwall). You should be your own nation. I like that your different from england. Stay that way.

Mary Williams
As a new comer to the island I don;t really feel this captures what Jersey means to the people here. I would like the anthem to include something about God's faithfulness to the people of the island

Andrew
The Abba song - Money, money, money

Bob
Jersey mon vie is crap. It belittles the island and makes me have less respect for it!

JANET BUTEL
I THINK THE JERSEY ANTHEM SHOULD BE 'BEAUTIFUL JERSEY' IT IS A TRADITIONAL SONG AND THE TUNE IS RECOGNISED BY MANY IT ALSO ENCOMPASSES EVERYTHING ABOUT JERSEY

madden

Julie
Either 'Beautiful Jersey', or 'Jersey Mon Vie' by Hedley Le Maistre... ;) You can hear 'Jersey Mon Vie' on Hedley's Myspace page, btw.... :p

Reg
Anthem for Jersey ,either one of two Pink Floyd songs "Money" or " The Lunatics have taken over the Asylum" or two songs segued together one by Raindow and one by D-REEM and dedicated to our our council of ministers ( except Stuart of course !) "Since you've been gone / things can only get better "

Wallser
Only one anthem is worth singing that is GOD SAVE THE QUEEN all this nonsence is only to inflate the egos of our so called goverment

richard
Don`t do it.

Andy
Having read the English version of Ma Normandie for the first time all I can say is that it has NOTHING at all to do with Jersey in it!- Change it asap.

Mark
Sorry Land of Hope and glory is England's unofficial anthem and I'm very proud of it. It's played at the Commonwealth games when England wins - so hands off! It's also played at Twickenham before and after England games (not as the national anthem of course). You could always adopt some kind of eulogy to Jonny 'the god' Wilkinson as he is likely to be the next King!

sarah
I think jeans by the view

jambojersey.com
I Personally would recommend something like, " Some Enchanted Evening "

Clarky
How about "Jersey Bounce" which i think was a Glen Miller number.Commision somebody to re write the lyrics and there you have it, a fun bouncy number, ideal.

Jerseyman in exile
Beautiful Jersey is the song for me. If the English dont like it, well theres a boat out in the morning.

Swampy from Germany
island song clearly Beautiful Jersey is the one and only song for Jersey..

Deborah
Let the beautiful ,talented, Jersey songwriter Nerina Pallot write an Anthem.

Phil
"Proud to be a Bean", as sung by Wet Wet Le Geyt, a local song, sung by a local band, what better?

Marc
The only really Jersey anthem is 'Beautiful Jersey'. Song in Jerriais and English.

Steve
Roderik - Jersey isn't a UK dependency it's a crown possession and crown dependency. The island PAYS the UK to look after our defence and if it wanted to Jersey could very easily become a nation state and in all but name already is.

Tonepone
It should clearly be Beautiful Jersey, sung in Jeriaise.

Brands
In response to Helgi Olafsson rude and stupid tirade, we Jersey Islanders are British and proud of it!!!

England does not suck, so much so that I actually married an Englishwoman, and she does not have an ugly face; but I will never call myself an Englishman as a result.

We are proud of the links with the British mainland and we are also proud to be European.

The presence of Anglo-Saxon genes on the island does not constitute a form of pollution(I shudder to think what opinions you harbour in relation to Scandinavian people who aren't of good Nordic-Aryan stock...)

As Britons, we use the English language, without which our economy would not be able to survive.

As for the Normand population, they speak a romanic language, as opposed to us British islanders and you Scandinavians, the Dutch and the Germans.

Finally, this may come as a surprise to you, but I'm actually pro-Scandinavian. I've always greatly admired nations where the governments believe in Social Democracy, and I don't consider your anti-British opinions to reflect the opinions of most Scandinavians.

Helgi 脫lafsson
I think people should not speak english in Jersey but their own norman language, They should also close all ties with the UK and work on closer contacts with Normandy. We all know England sucks but it麓s no need for them to come to this Norman island and polute it with their ugly faces. We scandinavians love and respect our norman bretherens.

JOE BOND
BEST I HAVE SEEN FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

GTR
"GOD SAVE THE BEAN"

Roderick
I find it odd that we refer to "Ma Normandie" as our national anthem because Jersey is not a nation-state and therefore cannot have a national anthem. "Ma Normandie" may be referred to as a local or regional anthem, the same way that Scotland has an historic anthem, despite being part of the UK. "Ma Normandie" is a beatiful song, although it extols Normandy, rather than Jersey. This creates a problem because Normandy is a department of the French Republic, whereas Jersey is a national dependency of the UK. I am convinced that we do need a new local anthem, preferably an elegy of our fair isle sung in English, with a suitable translation in Jerriais to appease the traditionalists.

J
How about 'proud to be a bean'?

Benny
Ha ha yeah, 'Bloodstained Money' by Bulletproof!!

Jonny F
Who are these idiots on here? Jersey has every right to have an anthem and I think the current one is great.

brands
"Land of Hope and Glory" would do very nicely, so nicely in fact that Mainlanders should use it to supersede "God Save The Queen".

joe
I think it is ridiculous to have an anthem foe such a small place and population.

JC
I like Mon Normandie. We learnt it in Jerriais when I was at school.

field face
'jersey hate' - bulletproof the truth hurts.

GaaGaa
I think " party time " by the wizard & the frog should be jerseys anthem, i think it already is - party time, party time, at the end of the week its party time, Craig Healey packs a dvd and at the end of the week its party time - this is an anthem that represents any good kid our age in jersey trying to make a living and having a good time, PARTY TIME :)
