The Switch whole band

Making The Switch

by Andy de Castro
With such a wealth of musical talent in the island, one of my favourite bands to catch live is The Switch. I met up with them recently, and found out what makes The Switch tick.

One only has to meet The Switch to realise that what makes them so atypical is their individualism and the fact that they resist from attempting to fit in with mainstream youth bands.

They are self-confessed odd-bods whose influences draw from the not-so-recent past

"probably jazz and nutty keyboard whizzes"
Tom Falle, The Switch, discussing his musical influences

The Switch was initially formed by Tom Falle and Edward Bailhache in the late 90鈥檚, playing mainly classical rock covers ranging from Dire Straits to Queen. Having known each other since birth, Tom and Ed work remarkably well together and produce some of the group鈥檚 best work.

The Switch emerged officially in September 2004 with Ed Bailhache, Tom Falle, Josh Yates and Jack Savage at its element.

Whilst time and dedication pursued, their standard increased and with the additional two members, the band now feature in various gigs around the island.

With a determination to reach the professional industry, The Switch currently pursue in writing and recording their own music.听

Ed, bassist, gained the title of Young Musician of the Year 2006 and is a complete music whiz destined for a future in the musical profession. Ed鈥檚 experience and classical training is balanced by the other three members of the band, whose musical experience has been less structured. However, with Ed鈥檚 training, the bands music is saved from being overdramatic but has a stylish element instead.

Despite only having had 2 years of professional training, drummer Josh鈥檚 musical ability is as sophisticated as a semi-professional drummer. His time with teacher Chris Troy has proved him to be an extremely quick learner, this reflected in his creative and artistic playing.

Tom, keyboards, is admittedly the most enthusiastic yet temperamental member of the band. Owning a grand total of 12 keyboards, he is remembered for his unique performing style and occasionally disturbing fashion sense. According to Tom, his main musical influences are 鈥減robably jazz and nutty keyboard whizzes鈥

Jack Savage
Jack Savage

Guitarist Jack prefers to stay at home during his spare time and write songs about washing spiders down plugholes and the terrors of adoption. Nonetheless, his lessons with John Guy have allowed him to explore the more advanced guitar techniques and plays his solos with gusto.

Together, these four differing backgrounds and personalities unite to create this fab ensemble widely recognised as The Switch.
