Why should I be eating my lunch alfresco and someone is holding a ciggie 3 foot from their face, most of that smoke is in blowing in my face whilst I am eating.Smoking = no consideration to non smokers. Also if smokers love smoking so much, why can't they cope with a room full of ciggerette smoke and have to open windows to obtain fresh air ???
clifford le cornu
I live in wales and it's great to walk about the town where I live and go ibto shops without smoke everywhere
albi
I'm a smoker and i think that banning smoking inside was a great idea, its nice to walk in somewhere abd it's not full of smoke.BUT to ban it in alfresco areas is just ridiculous and discriminating.
derek williamson
i think it is unfare to completely ban ppl from smoking,i have smoked all my adult life and have no intention of stopping,so u make any bans you wish
mike-c
smoking outside is better than smoking inside cause it won't harm many people.
Flip-Flop
Take a look at studies on how Japan has a higher percentage of the population than scotland who smoke but a much lower cancer rate, Japan eats mostly fish compared to red meat in scotland. No one seems to care about the fact its more your diet than just smoking
BB
Yeah, Dillon. Great idea to ban cigarettes, but the smokers have no more toys to throw out of their prams now! Why did you think of that sooner?
Chris Ace (school:DYCA)
i need some advice FASTim in my class right now and need advice on how to stop smoking like a primary advice!!!
Dillon
If the states were that bothered about people's health, they'd ban cigarettes completely. But it brings in too much money. Watch how much taxes would go up without the money accrued from smokers
Dan
yea people like you southern make me sick,my farther died threw smoking related illness, why make other people breathe your smoke and make there health suffer, its just plain selfish, how about we get all the smack users to inject you with there drugs using the same needle, its the same point, congrats on acheiving this ban threw selfish miss use.
roy 27
think of all those who wil probably loose there jobsdue to the lack of customers
Tonra
Southern, it's inconsiderate people like you that caused it to be banned in the first place. If you all hadn't been so selfish and insisted on smoking everywhere or anywhere it might never have come to this. Well done Southern. I love people like you!
BB
Southern, you're a great advocate for smokers. Bet they're delighted to have you on their side!
Southern
Ban smoking in al fresco areas and I will stand the other side of the rope and deliberately blow smoke into the eating area.I have a Ph.D.Ridiculous proposition!
Tracey
I get sick of people talking about Roy Castle and how he got cancer from passive smoking. Roy Castle was a club act. It was his CHOICE to go into clubs and perform, and he made a lot of money from it. My mum was a club act for years, 74 and still going strong. Are you saying he wouldn't have got cancer had he not gone into clubs. WISE UP!
Tony Pike
The sooner people wise up to the fact that smoking kills, & Second hand smoke does too, the better. It is up to responsible politicians in this island to protect the public. It is a filthy and disgusting habit and should be outlawed.
bridie
why dont they just put muzzles on people that tell other people how to live thier lives
Andrew
Jono - what's your point? You have an MA? So what? Hasn't improved your ability to punctuate, or to type with the caps lock off.
colin
smokers say if you dont like the smell stay away from pubs, roll on the ban, tables will be turned, keep your stinking habit at home
Iva Bigin
well joe i dissagree! 1. it is second hand smoke wich is just as bad us smokers dont wont our lives in fected, its your choice to smoke its our choice for smokers not to smoke next to us. 2. The worst thing is parents smoking infront of thier children in a car ! so joe go away
joe
i can't belive u non smokers are still moaning about us smokers. DO we know its bad for us??? well just for the record yes we do ,we hear u non smokers moaning about it everywhere we go. we get treated as criminals to which we are NOT.. nxt u guys will want air freshners round the dog waste bins??? or better still make dogs and cats wear nappies??? u want a non pollution world go buy an oxygen tank cause theres plenty of other polluting things out there that can kill u..at the end of the day we live in an unfair world some things u love and some things u hate it's called life, non smokers go and get one and stop trying to live ours i'd love to go on but i'm going for a fag break......
Terry
I don't think people are bothered that smoking is dangerous - it just stinks and this smell sticks to you cloths hair and body. That reason enough to ban it in public.
And for the member of JSP 鈥 I have been asked many times 鈥渄o you mind if I smoke鈥 YES I DO they just light up anyway.
Cigarette butts on pavements 鈥 Don鈥檛 blame the pubs, it鈥檚 the smokers who make the mess. A 拢100 on the spot fine for littering or 20 hours community service sweeping up cigarette butts would solve this.
I have no objection to people smoking in their own homes but feel very sorry for their children.
Booyaka
Yo Colin,
Have you ever heard of Roy Castle? RIP,
passive smoke Nailed him!!Check yo facts too Homeboy.
jade
i think smoking outsidwe is better than inside but then it does cause pollution.
Tonra
Don't be daft! Try to use a bit ot common sense and you'll answer your own question
l rud.
I recently like most of the island, had the fortune to smoke some of that lovely legal spice which is attracting so much attention. but i suppose like the rest of the activities the public like to do... it will be banned shortly... Anyway i would like to know as this is not a cigerette and there is no tobacco or nocotine, it must be legal to light up in a bar surely.. well its a scent smelling product isnt it.... can anyone tell me whether we can or cant..
BB
kathyhalcro, this debate is not about drinking alcohol, it's about banning smoking. Nobody ever said smoking caused violence, etc. I'm pretty sure when it was decided on banning it, it wasn't listed in the reasons to do so either. I'm not condoning excessive alcohol consumption by any means, but it's a separate issue. What's with the "working man's pub?". If all you smokers are so fond of them how come none of you know if there are any. Is this just another straw you're trying to clutch?
Alan Cairns
Food fresh in California
Ersatz at the best is my experience. Even with smoking it tastes better in Jersey
kathyhalcro
This is just taking it too far,i still disagree with the ban anyway,as why can't they put a health warning on alcohol bottles/cans as alcohol causes much more damage than any cigarette does,it not only causes harm to the drinker but to the families as well, plus how many fights do you get as a result of smoking? none of course but with alcohol yes you most certainly do,domestic violence again none over a ciggie but a diferant matter with alcohol,i could go on and on,but i think you get my picture,we smokers surely still have some rights!!! we all are aware it is not good for us,but i don't drink alcohol and i know which i prefer, and what happened to the working mans pub? do they exsist anymore?
JONO
OH WELL!COLIN AND CHARLY!
LOOKS LIKE YOU LOSE!!
SO IT,S UP IN A PUFF OF SMOKE FOR YOU,AND A BREATH OF "FRESH AIR FOR THE REST OF US. LAUGH THAT OFF!!!
BY THE WAY I HAVE AN MA WHAT,S YOUR EDUCATION?
SMOKING BEHIND THE BIKESHED?
Don Lamy
Ban smoking,I live in California and its great to eat and taste the food, has made no difference after the initial shock.Make Jersey fresh and clean
BB
My my, people are getting aggressive over this. Why resulting to calling names if you don't agree with an opinion. Smoking bothers me more because of the awful smell that it leaves on your clothes and your hair after sitting in a pub. Back home in Ireland I'd say it's a resounding success now!
imabeannme
Flash etc>
you'll die from the stress of worrying about second hand smoke before you do from second hand smoke!!
get a life!
Peter Bougourd
I would prefer that smoking was also stopped in alfresco area,s as sometimes a cigerette will be left burning in an ashtray and then the smell is horrendous whilst you are eating.
Non smoker.
Flash, get a life if the wind blows up wind, are you having a laugh, you sound like a snob.........
Flash,
Smoking in alfresco eating areas in unsocial. If the wind blows someone's smoke over to your table, it makes things quite unpleasant.
I personally tend to avoid these situations if I can;if not, I tend to sit myself so that I'm upwind from people's smoke.
Alan
All people who want to ban smoking in outside eating areas are strokers!
Michael Jones
Stop smoking inside pubs and restaurants by all means, but alfresco is another thing altogether, I believe that people must be allowed to smoke outside, it is their right to ruin their health, non smokers can stay inside and enjoy a smoke free area
Ashley
It's important that businesses can hold on to the portion of their customers that choose to smoke. Stopping smokers from killing themselves everywhere will definitly have a huge impact on cafes bars and restaurants - especially over here where everyone seems to smoke. Smoking will become taboo in it's own time - in the same way as walking around with a can of special brew is. No need to force the issue.
Turkish Woodbine.
Richard, dont go to restaurants then and you wont feel uncomfotable simple solution,or cant you cook idiot.
Gal
I have never smoked and i never will, so the person saying people against this are ex-smokers are wrong. Smoking kills, whether in your own home or out in public, so why be so selfish. Let other people live and if you wanna kill your lungs then do it in your own homes and not around other people
ross
I agree with richard all u smokers dont be so damn selfish because you cant be bothered to give up n sto ruining other peeps life just because you hav a poor habit
Richard
I'm a non-smoker and I can't stand people smoking in the pub or even more so - the restaurant when I go out for a drink or meal.
So Jersey Smoking Population get your facts straight.
There are lots of reasons why people don't like smoking, especially while they're eating but the main one (aside from the health issues) is the fact that it STINKS and makes me feel uncomfortable.
Jersey Smoking Population
All you people who are banging on about anti-smoking are all friggin ex-smokers with an axe to grind. Most people who have never smoked are usually tolerant it's the ones who have given up and still want a smoke who cause all the fuss.
rita
whilst i dont agree with the no smoking ban, i have no choice but to go along with the "law" but to put a total no smoking ban in Al-Fresco areas as well is ludacrus!!!! as far as i am concerned when the ban comes into force in jan07 i will think twice about going out and socialising!!! as i am in effect being dictated to about what i can do in a public place :ie Smoking as that is part of my enjoyment, and i can imagine a lot of people will probebly feel the same way. i may have been born in Austria but i am not going back to a Nazi dictated state!!!!
alex dolan
fair enough on banning smoking inside where it lingers in the air and spoils your meal a bit but i think banning it outside where it floats away and doesn't really bother anyone is just stupid.
M Vincent
If the Antis on here want non-smoking pubs ect, what is stopping you opening one, or is that not allowed.
You are not a selfish Prat Peter you are one of many.
Jono is selfish-go open your own place, be a little gold mine I should think.
Donnie
Why are governments intent on destroying pubs and using the smokers as an excuse to do it. Governments also seem to be confused as to what is private and public property. A pub is private property, people are invited in not forced in the issue of whether smoking takes place in a publicans home should be his and no one elses. If you think hordes of non smokers are going to fill these empty pubs think again its not going to happen. Tourists have plenty of other choices abroad to choose from where governments have elected for either separate smoking rooms or ventilation. Would I pay hundreds of pounds to come to Jersey to be told I couldnt smoke inside or outside either not on your life, I would take my money where it is welcome.
charles
JONO no your the selfish one who dosent believe in choice!!
There are many other causes of death that kill more than smoking!! Leave the decision to ban to the owners thats my view!!
Chris
It is amazing that unproven science has had such an severe effect upon the logical thinking of normal people. Yes, I know smoke smells and Yes, I know some people are adversely affected by it BUT total bans and sanctioned insults are destroying communities.
Pubs were formed to provide for the whole community and have done a good job by keeping less-desirable habits out of sight. Total bans and continued harrassment such as highlighted in this article have become the best advert for a bad habit that is becoming an attractive 'forbidden fruit'.
Just look at Ireland where, after an initial drop, smoking rates are only 0.5% below pre-ban levels. The unintended result of fanaticism.
Colin
Jono...please name three people who have been "lost" to deadly second hand smoke. The US government cant, the UK government cant, NONE of the public health offices can supply even one name.
The reason? No-one, not one single solitary person in a population of 6.5 billion people have EVER died due to passive smoke.
Check your facts before making moronic statements.
Peter
Jack says we should be more worried about car fumes than cigarette fumes. Possibly right if it is a waft of smoke from a passer by, but if you have a smoker at the table upwind of you give me the car fumes anyday.
Rob
What a nanny state! Inside?OK. To go as far as alfresco areas that is totally pathetic. Might as well ban it everywhere apart from the private home. No excuses about heath costs related to smoking. How much is spent on police and hospitals etc caused by drinkers. Wake up States Of Jersey before you kill what you have left of your Island.
JONO
WHAT A SELFISH PRAT YOU ARE PETER.OH THE PUB WILL LOSE YOU AS A CUSTOMER "BIG DEAL"
LOTS OF LOVED ONES ARE LOST TO THIS TERRIBLE HABIT, HENCE THE NEED TO CALL TIME ON IT ONCE AND FOR ALL!
Dave
It seems we are seriously losing grip on reality. It should be left to the landlord's discretion. Fair enough if you want to ban it inside, but don't impose the same rigid rules on external areas. I was recently in Guernsey (for my sins!) and I couldn't believe the effect the ban has had. I went to a few bars to find a bit of life, but every bar I went to was literally empty - and at peak times as well (i.e. Lunch and Dinner/evening). There was however quite a few people sitting in the "al fresco" areas - even non-smokers out to do a bit of socialising! I really do think that a ban on smoking outside pubs/restaurants will be the death of such establishments.
As for the "you've got to quit" arguement - every smoker knows they should quit and is probably trying to do so. We don't need to hear it from non-smokers. As for those who don't want to quit - fair enough. Leave 'em to it!
J.D.A
JACK I TOTALLY AGRRE WITH YOUR COMMENT, PEOPLE NEVER SAY ABOUT ALL THE POLLUTION CARS PUT INTO THE AIR THAT WE HAVE TO BREATHE, I DON'T SMOKE BUT I HAVE TO BREATH ALL YOUR TOXIC FUMES FROM ALL YOUR CARS, BUT NOTHING IS SAID ABOUT THAT, I DO THINK THAT SMOKERS ARE GETTING A REAL BUM DEAL HERE, GUERNSEY ARE HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS SINCE THE BAN CAME IN, & THEY DONE A MARCH TO BAN THE BAN AS IT SEVERLY DAMAGING THERE ESTABLISHMENT & TAKINGS, & WHAT ELSE ANNOYS ME IS THEY SAY SMOKING COSTS THE HEALTH LOADS OF MONEY, WELL WHAT ABOUT THE DIRNKERS, THERE ARE JUST AS MANY OF THEM SLOBBING ABOUT IN THE PARKS & IN TOWN EVERYDAY PI**ED EVERY DAY, THEY COST THE HEALTH JUST AS MUCH IF NOT MORE.
PLEASE BACK OFF THE SMOKERS & GIVE THEM A BREAK, IF I HAD IT MY WAY I WOULD LIKE ALL CARS TAKEN OFF THE ROAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO IN-HALE THERE TOXIC FUMES, BUT THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, SO THINK NEXT TIME YOU KEEP COMPLAINING.
Brands
Bravo!
Perhaps outdoor eating earas will see their turnaround increase as more non-smokers swell their clientele ranks.
Bob
It's more logical to force people to breathe clean air than to force them to breathe second hand smoke. Make the alfresco dining experience enjoyable by banning smoking!
Jack
I would be more concerned about what you are breathing in from car fumes when walking down the street than the odd bit of smoke from a passerby's lit cigarette.
Banner
Ban smoking everywhere, stop the horrible, disgusting thing so I don't have to smell it or breath it in.
Millie
People know that smoking is stupid. I'm a smoker myself and I know just how stupid I am to smoke and how terrible it is for you, I'm under no illusions believe me, but I still do it because its an addiction. People forget the smoking is actually a medical addiction, and imply that smokers can just stop like that.
Jen
Ban smoking in all places but in the private home. That way hopefully people will stop the stupid stupid habit. And if they don't stop at least I won't have to deal with it.
Peter
Definitely don't ban it in alfresco eating places, surely if you did that would mean it would be banned in outside seating in pubs. If smokers can't nip outside the pub for a quick ciggie then I don't think they'd bother going. I know my local would loose a regular. Smoking ban inside and out would be the death of pubs!
