Wicca Rhianna Galvin chose Lewis Tower in St Ouen's Bay as her piece of spiritually inspiring art. LEWIS TOWER Location La Grande Route des Mielles (aka Five Mile Road), St Ouen Why does it inspire me? Lewis Tower, one of the island's many Martello Towers, was built in 1779 to hold a cannon that could be used to attack French forces that tried to land on St Ouen's Bay. During the Occupation it was taken over by the Germans and a concrete room was built at the bottom to house a searchlight. Despite the tower being built for hostile needs, Rhianna, who moved to the area early in 2006, finds that nowadays the building inspires her and is a place of tranquility: "I have a busy life but just to sit and look and be still inside fills me with peace and calm, and even after a hard day I am inspired to get up and start afresh again life is good," explains Rhianna. "As long as I can remember I have loved St Ouen...My veranda has a swinging chair on it and faces the Lewis Tower," she describes, "I spend many hours just sitting and looking at 'My View'". "As a Wiccan I am very intune with the elements and the bay has all of these - water (the sea), air (breezy and gales), earth (the stability beneath our feet), and fire (the sun in the sky). "Early in the morning when the moon is setting and the sun rising the tower is swathed in mist and quiet, the sea may be calm or rough. Around lunchtime he has woken up and people are walking their dogs and riding their horses. As the sun sets and the moon rises in the sky he is swathed in听vibrant orange, pinks and blues the tower is sleeping." |
