obviously all non smokers think this ban is great. but lets think about the enviroment and all the tab ends that will be dumped by drunken revellers outside pubs instead of inside in ashtrays. ok you are not breathing smoke in pubs but what about the consequences on the enviromental because of this law?
Geoff Mason
I have just come back from a vacation in Jersey. Well done for getting the ban in place. As an ex-smoker I know how hard it can be to be denied a smoke when you need or want one. Just remember that your public areas are cleaner and more pleasant than before. The smokers will get used to the new situation and hopefully many of them will stop. At least the ones that do not will cause kess damage to the rest of us. I am looking forward to the England-wide ban on July 1st; having seen the difference, I cannot wait.
BB
Where were the "non-smoking" pubs prior to the ban being introduced? I certainly don't remember any, so as far as "Free Choice for All" goes, it's a great sentiment, but there was no choice given to the non-smoker before other than "if you don't like it - stay away". Smokers are getting as much choice now - they can still go to pubs but have to pop outside for a ciggie . . . hardly the end of the world. As for the mess - there is a definate need for disposal bins outside all pubs.
Andrew
Pipe-smoker deluxe - can I assume a similarly passioned plea to remove cars from the roads to safe-guard your health? Passive inhalation of exhaust fumes is far more detrimental to people's health. On yer bike!
Crack Pipe-Smoker Deluxe
For someone critical of the grammatical quality of other posters, you misspelled psychoanalyst. The sentence construction you use also leaves much to be desired. Your immature personal comments further demonstrate your deficits.
Based upon your own criterion, your poor use of the English language denotes you as a smoker.
Outside with you, enjoy your cigarette.
Free Choice for All
I am at a loss to understand how non-smokers now think it's fairer that they don't have to breath in peoples smoke???
Before the smoking ban was introduced everyone in Jersey had a completely free choice - go into a pub or and risk coming into contact with smoke or not to go in and drink somewhere else - completely doen to personal choice. If certain pubs were found to be smokier they would have no need to visit these places and could find somewhere a bit more smoke free. By implementing this law smokers are being punished and have no choice whatsoever being forced outside.
I myself am an ex-smoker and do not particularly enjoy the smell of smoke in pubs - although I am able to tolerate this - nothing compared to the car pollution in Jersey mainly due to the lack of Exhust emission tests. Ideally I would like to drink in a cleaner pub.
I am certainly not a bigot such as the majoirty of no smokers suddenly appear to be, and do beleive that it should be down to freedom of choice.
I have friends who drink in working mens pubs - Squires, Vic Minden Place etc. and the ratio of smokers far exceeds the non-smokers in these i.e. about 80 - 20. Surely in a pub such as this it should be the landlords choice as to whether the patrons are allowed to smoke and this could be marked somewhere, clearly therefore advising those people who don't wish to breathe other people's smoke that they should instead visit one of the non-smoking pubs.
I have noticed how much queiter pubs seem since the ban was implemented and would imagine this will further decrease. The smokers will continue to stay away as their civil rights have been broken and the small band of smug non-smokers who now say they're back in the pubs after not going cos of the smoking will gently ease off. Interestingly these people are concerned about their health in relation to smoke but perfectly happy to drink - you have to wonder how stupid some people can be .... or maybe they just aren't to keen on their livers / kidneys!
As said I'm an ex-smoker and gave up because of the rising cost not the health rsisk - in addition I am a fairly regular visitor to the pub and don't let the health implications bother me - I just don't beleive in double standards!!!
Pipe Smoker Deluxe
CPSD - you are clearly quite the budding psycho-analyst. Well done. Your interpretation of events is spot on. I especially like the bit about me having been "busted" (how old are you?). You missed the point of my original post. Perhaps you should go outside and have a smoke to calm down (and stick to the day job in future).
Crack Pipe-Smoker Deluxe
People like you that get busted for making personal attacks, often justify their behaviour by attempting to divert responsibility from themselves.
One of the more obvious means of doing this is to accuse others of lacking a sense of humour.
Nice try, my pedantic "friend".

The States are Stupid, they should have made as part of the non smoking law a rule that all the Pubs etc. Must have a Fire Safe Bin for all the Butts at the entrance. Where else did they think they were going to go????

Crack Pipe-Smoker Deluxe (clever name btw), please get a sense of humour. I was merely making an observation about the general quality of the posts. If people re-read their posts before hitting 'send' they might pick up the catalogue of grammatical, spelling, syntactical and various other abuses of the English language that occur in the posts below.

I gave up smoking years ago and feel healthier now smoking is smelly and such a disgusting habit which is hard to break and makes you and your clothers and other none smokers and places smell really bad foul and filthy as i must have smelt and as i dont want lung cancer and to die young iam glad there is a ban as smoking i have to now admit does nothing for your health
and there is too much pollution in this world and though it is up to each individual whether they smoke or not and dislike telling people what to do. Smoking is bad and gives you bad breath and teeth and giving up saves you a lot of money in the long run. Jersey should get used to this none smoking ban in places and accept it as the smoking ban has been a success in other parts of the world and is for the positive benefits of all. People if they still chose to smoke can do if they have to in the comforts of their own home where they can wind down after work with a fag cigerette and a beer put there feet up and relax but im glad we have a healthier smoke free pubs etc and as a recent none smoker iam happy to say i have broken the habit thru strong willpower and have to say smoking is not for me and im glad our Jersey Pubs and establishments are now smoke free

YAY! I can breathe!!

Wise-up... many people, including smokers, enjoy a drink after work. Smokers are no longer able to smoke in a pub and the alternative is to be humiliated by having to stand outside a bar.
The smokers may either stop drinking completely or drink at home.
The link between grammatical errors and smokers, which you claim, only diminishes the credibility of the entire discussion and the person making the claim. Review the post by George (immediately beneath your post).. I rest my case.
Clive Pearce
Now ban filter tips and make Capstain Full Strength the only cigarettes available and the litter problem and smokers will disapear. Great!
mick jagger
The smoking ban is inconvinient and quite frankly ridiculous. The town centre is like an ashtray. outside every pub there is piles upon piles of cigarette stubs, it's horrible. the pubs and clubs smell of body odour and the horrible smell sof the carpets which were before hidden by the smoke. the ammount of people outside pubs smoking can sometimes be scary and intimidating therefore losing business for the pubs owners. th only people who are happy about this is about 25% of non smokers. lets sort it out and lift the ban! it is making our island look like an ashtray and very unnatractive.
Pipe-Smoker Deluxe
This argument is an absolute no-brainer. Passive smoking is detrimental to health. Fact. I, like most others, choose not to smoke. Why should our health be compromised by those who do smoke? Cigarettes have not been made illegal - smokers are still able to smoke, they are merely prevented from doing so in enclosed public areas. How can that be unreasonable? If you don't like standing outside to smoke then quit. As for smokers staying at home because of the ban - stop being so childish!
As for statistics, I believe that smokers make 75% more spelling and grammatical errors and proffer 100% more spurious arguments than non-smokers when posting to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Jersey discussion forums!!
George
I think the smoking ban is great! I can now go to the pub, have lunch and come back to the office without my clothes stiking like before.
It's also better to go out at night, now we can actually breathe!
I believe it's better for the health of the bars/pubs staff too.
It did create a side effect though, smokers are smoking in front of pubs and night clubs and throwing their fags on the sidewalk. That only demonstrates how bad educated some people are, not caring about the place they live.
It is a free world indeed as Taff said, but not free to do whatever you want! You live in a society. There are laws and regulations created by your representatives. Just as you can drive you car in King St, you can not smoke in pubs anymore. It's a law the has been discussed and voted by our representatives.
If you don't like the ban, than work politically to revert it.
That's something called democracy, a majority decides over the minority.
HMS
Smoking's bad for you and other people, fact. The ban is enforced to protect the health of non-smokers. Get over it. Don't like it? Then quit or don't go to pubs/clubs.
D G KEVAN
(smoker) Personally I think the smoking ban has seen Big Brother gone mad ! I do respect the health reasons for introducing the ban, but I still believe it is an individual choice whether to smoke, drink, drive or take up any pastime that may be considered by some to be risky, including Skateboarding, Parascending, or even walking along the cliff paths of Jersey's north coast !
For centuries much of the Island's income was as a result of either collecting duty or evading paying duty in the days of privateers, what is going to replace this source of income for the Island if the Pub Landlord goes out of business due to lack of trade ? What kind of social impact will the ban have on normal people who like to wind down after work with a couple of pints and a few laughs with their friends just to keep them sane in this very expensive Utopia that a few well meaning outsiders who are on a short term contract and will also have a short term memory when it comes to the consequences of their impositions !
I have always thought that we lived in a democracy, who will pick up the tab for a social divide ? Financial or otherwise, probably not the people who introduced or should I say imposed with no referendum, the not so subtle changes we are now seeing in Jersey.
Wake up establishment, try and act like elected representatives as opposed to a benevolent dictatorship, and let the individual make the choice be it smoker, landlord, hotelier or resterauntuer and at least keep this Island smiling and happy and a welcoming place to visit for all of our visitors who do not live in Cottonwool land!
dan
We went out in town and had more of a laugh outside the pubs than inside. By the end of the evening all of the non-smokers were outside too...
CH
The smoking ban has been a success in every other city that has implemented it, I am sure Jersey will adapt.
Tonra
Where did you get your figure that 1 in 3 are smokers? I work in an office of 20 and 2 are smokers. Think your workings might a bit off! Anyway in your "recent survey" was there also a section for whether non-smokers would go to smoking bars or pubs? Think you're only looking an one side of the equation . . . so, "Go figure" yourself!
CD
1 in 3 adults are smokers... this potentially means 33% of all pubs' customers are turned away at the door. A recent survey showed that 87% of smokers will not go into a smoke-free pub... so about 26% guarenteed drop in business accross all pubs! Go figure! I think pub owners show have the final say to re-gain that 26% revenue...
Voice of Reason
Was not the prohibition of smoking in bars driven by health concerns for those working in bars.?
To permit bars for smokers may seem fair-minded, yet it does not remove environmental problems for the bar staff.
By default, smoking is not an inherent human behaviour but an optional lifestyle choice. Clearly, one's lifestyle choice should impede or diminish the lifestyle quality of another.
People that smoke will be now more likely to drink at home. This may result in an increase in social problems such as domestic violence and alcohol abuse.
Sometimes, what seems like progress is not actually progress... time will tell..!Habitot

If you have a designated area in pubs, how are you going to stop the smoke & stink from seeping over to the non-smoking area. Would you like a glass cage with huge extractor fans above your head? Why should you have a designated area for your bad habit, would you also like a designated area for nose-pickers and people who like to spit as well. After all these are just as disgusting but far less harmful. If you choose to smoke, go right ahead, smoke your little lungs out, but keep it away from public areas.
Taff
It doesnt really matter if its taking over my life or not, I am among hundreds of smokers and Id say there are a hell of a lot more smokers than non smokers, still its beside the point, point is that its a free world, if people choose to smoke then so they do, seeing as the government allow cigarettes to be sold then I dont see why we cant have a designated area in pubs to smoke them. I guess you have no bad habits etc etc
BB
Taff, what a shame that you have such a dependancy that it has taken over your life to such an extent! Your next fag opportunity must be constantly on your mind. Guess that's the curse of addiction.
Taff
I think its a disgrace that there isnt a designated smoking area in pubs/clubs. Alcohol isnt good for people either! I read in the JEP that police are reminding people that is a crime to throw cigarette butts on the floor... where are the extra ashtrays to put them then???? Ive not seen any outside pubs....
Personally I enjoy smoking, and am finding that I spend half my night back and fore the nearest door to smoke, or that I just drink up twice as quick and move on to the next pub so I can smoke on the way.... As for clubs/restaurants well I have been in either since the ban and dont intend too cause I wont enjoy myself, and most of my pals have said the same.
BB
Am I missing something, or is the smoking ban going to put more vehicles on the road? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a separate issue . . . I don't think banning smoking is going to put more cars out there and people have been using al-fresco areas for years in that environment! Stop clutching at straws, and using loss in taxes and car fumes as some sort of leverage as to why you should be allowed smoke everywhere. Bet you weren't always so concerned about how the government get their tax money. Most smokers I know constantly whinge about the price anyway. Surely, you can see people have the right not to breath in YOUR smoke or come home stinking of YOUR fags after an hour in a bar!
Jamie
I think that they should have brought the ban in in the middle of summer then at least they smokers could ease more gently into not being allowed to smoke in pubs as they could would be going outside to smoke in mild weather. Chucking them outside in the middle of winter is probably not the kindest thing.
Jersey Wonder
The pictures speak for themselves. Is anyone betting that one day, pubs themselves will be banned..? After all, to the true believer, alcohol is as bad as smoking or probably WORSE. In the meantime, enjoy the empty pubs, there will be a lot of space for the smug non-smokers to sip their shandies.
Richard Haine
I really hope this makes a big difference to our restaurants and pubs - I hope that now more people will now go to out and enjoy a meal or a pint rather than coming home stinking of smoke or being put off by the thought of this. This should in the long term improve business, but may take a few years to really make a positive boost to business.
A Non-Smoker
I think that this is just another example of our government going too far. They have missed a fantastuc opportunity here. Why not have licenses to have smoking in your pubs? That way landlords can decide if they want their pub to be smoking, they pay a fee for the privilege, smokers can smoke, non-smokers can go to an allocated non-smoking pub/club, and the government get an extra few pennies.
The way they have decided to do it however, is to ban it everywhere, no one has a choice. Well, except to stand outside on the street and smoke. Are we going to see an increase of bins put outside offices and shops or are we just going to see out pavements littered with dirty cigarette ends?
Jilly
I have to admit that as Dave says I actually took up smoking to get fag breaks at work. When I started working in a bank over here someone suggested that I said I was a smoker so I could claim the two 10 minute cigarette breaks a day. Smokers ended up taking 3 or 4 breaks a day - which adds up to a fair amount of time avoiding sitting at the desk working.
JANE
DAVE,I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY TO YOU,I DON'T SMOKE MYSELF & BUT I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY, YOU GO ON ABOUT YOU HAVING TO BREATHE IN ALL THAT SMOKE, WELL WHAT ABOUT ALL THE CAR FUMES THAT I HAVE TO BREATHE IN EVERYDAY THAT DOES AS MUCH DAMAGE, BUT I BET THEY WON'T TAKE ALL THE CAR;S OFF THE ROAD WILL THEY, BUT I DO SAY TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO MOANED & MOANED TO GET THIS BAN IN, DON'T COMPLAIN WHEN YOUR TAX GOES SKY HIGH TO MAKE UP THE DEFICIT OF ALL THE BILLIONS OF POUND'S THAT WILL BE LOST.
Dave
Fantastic, we can all now enjoy a seat in the pub without stinking of smoke and a coughing fit the next day.
I worked in pubs for 5 years and have never smoked in my life, in that time I met several people who actually took up smoking just to get a fag break.
To all the smokers complaining about infringement of their rights, how about our rights to free air? Anyway, the argument is over now, smokers can cough themselves to selfish oblivion, on their own from now on...
Ken Roberts
I used the opportunity to quit, and finally found a hypnotherapist, which did the trick. I've been without since 29th December and you dod look at it differently when you're not addicted anymore. I think we should go for a smoke-free island next!
Maryanne
Far from being an anti-social habit smoking, thanks to the smoking ban you now get groups of smokers huddling together outside the pubs. I've met and chatted to more new people in the last week than I did in all 2006!!!
Michael H In Bolton
Hello all, I have booked flights & a holiday in Jersey for this year as a direct response to the smoking ban.
My family wont have to breath other peoples smoke this year
Compliments to the Jersey Gov.
Louisa
I'd class myself as a social smoker and I'm delighted that the ban has come into force. I really only smoked after a few drinks in the pub and now that won't be an option hopefully I won't need to smoke ever again. And it'll be even easier because there won't be people around tempting me!
Richard Briffa (Dick Biff)
I was a smoker for years until I gave up several months ago. The only reason I didnt go to the pubs was that the smell of smoke tempted me to start again - especially after a few shandys!! Im now so glad I can now revisit my local haunts without the temptation.
Dalriada
A lot of smokers are great at shouting about the infringment on their right to smoke. Totally forgetting all the years your smoking infringed on our rights not to. Your answer was don't go to pubs if you don't like it, well, the tide has turned so get over it and stop whinging!
Geoff T Grose
It is fantastic that the ban is in place (my lungs and clothes remain smoke free). We no longer thing twice having smoke free air transport, visiting the cinema, riding a bus, this is the next (natural) step to considering others and the harm smoking can cause to those and others, including the workers. Its a great step forward which will be looked back, in a few years, as a good step for everyone!
Selfish
My Mum worked behind a bar for 25 years and never touched a fag. She died of lung cancer aged 49 because of the smoke in bars! How is that fair? I think the smoking ban is fantastic! Bit late but...
JerseyDave
I'm a non-smoker and a regular pub drinker. Smoking has never bothered me in the past, though my local turned non-smoking in December after refurbishment. I have to say it is so much nicer to be in a smoke free environment. Now I can even wear 'nice' cloths no matter which pubs I'm visiting without coming home stinking of smoke.
johnny
its no problem - had three pints last night in the time itnormally takes to have one, so i could get the hell out of there for my fix!
jamie
that last comment is rubbish. When the ban came in over here in Ireland people said the same thing and it NEVER happened but what did happen is the state allowed for smoking areas outside the pup or club with drinks areas also. the jersey system is, as usual, over the top and stupid. if a smoking area is out in the open then people should be allowed to smoke. Typical jersey going too far
Guy
The smoking ban is a law targeting health benefits. The ancilliary benefits are environmental and moral. Unfortunately it is is a nanny-state law but the ideology is good. Hopefully, like snuff before it, smoking will become a historical relic.
Scotland. ( Clydebank )
J.D.A. I agree totally i smoke occasionally but the drinking man's pub should allow smokers to carry on smoking ie;The Cesarea,The Vic ,The Brit,The Don,Gloster Vaults,The Dorset etc you no the pubs i mean, doctor's surgery will be a popular place this winter i would imagine as quite a number of the older genertion will probably suffer from hyperphermia now that they have to stand outside and smoke were is the common sense,i have lived in Jersey now for 4 years and the rules and regulations are a total disaster in my opinion this has got to be addressed at the next AGM,i rest my case.
tbm
Oh great, seems I'm now at a greater risk of passive smoking than before ... town on Tuesday had a higher-than-usual proportion of people puffing away in the high street & there was smoke everywhere, which is hard to avoid in a public place - at least I was able to avoid smokey bars & restaurants!! Wonder if our politicians are brave enough to place a ban on some public places like town or the beaches?
Danni
I am a smoker myself and I totally am in favour for the ban. I want it to be as inconvineient and difficult as possible for me to take out a cigarette and light up, the less I smoke the better. Hopefully this ban coming in will be the kick I need to quit for good.
J.D.A
I AM A SMOKER MYSELF, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH STOPPING SMOKING IN RESTAURANTS & FOOD AREAS, AS I DON'T LIKE IT MYSELF, SO YES TO THAT, BUT THERE ARE STILL A FEW DRINKING MEN'S PUB OVER HERE, AND I DO THINK THAT CERTAIN PUBS LIKE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE CHOICE TO THE LANDLORD/LADY TO HAVE SMOKING OR NO SMOKING PUB, AND THEN AT LEAST THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SIGNS ON THEM TO SAY THIS A SMOKING ESTABLISHMENT & YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO GO IN OR NOT. I JUST THINK THEY HAVE GONE TO FAR WITH THIS BAN.
RBunt
Its been done and dusted by the powers that be. Wouldn't it have been better for the individual landlord to decide if they allow smoking or not? A large sign at the entrance advising would be clients if it was a smoke free smoke zone or not. Everyone happy? No member of the public is forced to enter. Supply and demand basically. It is now forced upon everyone. Wait till the warm weather is here you will see all the NON SMOKERS sitting in the alfresco areas set out for smokers enjoying thier drink. What would happen if the landlord decided to place a sigh outside saying that a particular part of the alfresco area was reserved for smokers?
I believe another reason given was to protect the staff from having to breath in the fumes on health grounds. Smoking is allowed in Prison. How about the poor guards, dosent their healt count? I suppose in time to come The States Of Jersey will be sued by staff working there because their well being was not protected. Oh by the way I'm a NON SMOKER and my real feelings are why not ban selling cigarettes in Jersey and elsewhere all together since its such an evil habbit. As for that, why not a total ban on alcohol as well, so bad for our health and what a saving on medical grounds and police time. 20 odd peole arrested in one night over the holiday period. BEN quote "So much better = a place to sit and no filthy odour. Great idea" Would you feel better if you could walk the streets of a night time knowing that you wont get set upon by some drink fueled yob? Maybe not! I would. I don't drink or smoke do you?
Andy
George Orwell had it wrong its was,nt 1984 it was 2006 and I'm not just talking about the smoking ban next is booze and then what sex ? and before you mock they now want our medicial records put on a database (handy information for govenments and insurance companys)and lets not forget the I.D. card. Its time we learnt the art of civil disobedience. P.s. I'm a non smoker I just don't like people telling me or other people what they should or should'nt do
Ben
