Ministry of Change

With suggestions of a Children鈥檚 Minister and splitting Planning and Environment we ask: what else for change?

Imagine for a second you became Chief Minister of Jersey.

Picture yourself in the big seat with a piece of paper in front of you. On the paper you have the list of the current 10 Ministries and you need to come up with a list of people you want to fill those Ministries.

One of the those Ministries is your own department - but you've also got Economic Development, Education, Sport and Culture, Home Affairs, Health and Social Services, Housing, Planning and Environment, Social Security, Transport and Technical Services and Treasury and Resources.

On the other side you have a list of all the States Members with the Senators on the top due to the island wide mandate.

Somehow you need to match the States Members to the list of Ministries - but you can't make them fit.

You can't change the States Members but you can change the Ministries instead.

So, starting with the list above and knowing you need to keep your own department - what would you change?

Under the current Ministerial Government rules you are allowed ten Ministries including your own - you can't add any more without a change to the law.

With that in mind - how would you shape your Ministries?

At the moment you have:

  • Economic Development
  • Education, Sport and Culture
  • Home Affairs
  • Health and Social Services
  • Housing
  • Planning and Environment
  • Social Security
  • Transport and Technical Services
  • Treasury and Resources

You can merge existing Ministries to allow you to create new ones, you can get rid of some completely and you can come up with something completely new.

You could merge Treasury and Resources with Economic Development and in turn split Planning and Environment - or ditch both and create a Ministry for Funny Hats and another for Silly Walks.

What about taking something from Health and Social Services and something from Education, Sport and Culture to create a new Families Ministry?

Should all your Ministers come from the pool of twelve Senators with an island wide mandate or should it be a case of the best Member for the job?

From December the 12 Senators will be:

Ben Shenton, Terry Le Main, Freddy Cohen, Terry Le Sueur, Jim Perchard, Stuart Syvret, Alan Breckon, Alan MacLean, Paul Routier, Philip Ozouf, Ian Le Marquand and Sarah Ferguson.

Tell us your suggestions using the form below.

does not matter who the individual is but the best person for the job for jersey's sake.

Ministry of out of touch with reality has to be run by Terry the Sewer.

Yes AA but do you not agree it is a fundamental paradox having both the Planning and Environment under one banner...obviously it has worked well for Senator Cohen and Ozouf in the past but lets wait and see if it actually has any real benefit for the Island..if that department had been slowed down as you put it perhaps it would have given them more time to make a better judgement on the suitability of many of the sites they have now built houses on. Goose Green stands as a particular decision of the uttermost malpractice.

The more different ministries you have, each with their own infrstracture, the more complext and slow doing anything becomes and the more people you have doing adminstration.
