A strong Basque community has remained in the UK since the 1937 immigration, centring on the Bayswater area of London. It has also attracted the older generation of Spanish Republicans too.

The Basque Cildren of '37 Association has formed to keep the history of this remarkable humanitarian gesture alive.
Leah Manning, in her auto-biography "A life for education" published one moving letter she received that summed up the strength of feeling the young refugees felt for her actions. It must surely be also addressed to so many thousands in Britain too...
Dear Sirs,
The undersigned on behalf of orphaned children of militiamen with to express that we are the sons and daughters of poor workers who at the beginning of the uprising of the traitor 'generals' rose against them and thus found their death.
We have been given shelter by a second mother, this second mother we do not know how to thank for her attentions and kindnesses shown to us;

_this all the more so since we are here only temporarily so that when we are installed permanently, we just cannot imagine how wonderful it will be._
