Your Story: John Fryer, my Grandad |
|
I liked working with other airmen although they were from different countries I didn't think the payment was good because it was very little even though I enjoyed travelling to other countries and meeting other people.
I remember when I was in the R.A.F training grounds.I put a gas mask on and 12 other people did. The officer put you in a hut and he made you run around the hut until you were worn out. He made you take your gas mask off and filled the hut with gas witch made you cough and choke and cry. Then he'd shut the door of the hut for 5 minutes before he'd let you out. Then he made you jog around the football pitch to clear your head and lungs.
I remember when the Russian President built the Berlin Wall and a famous French actress called Bridget Bardot filmed part of a film at the R.A.F base whilst I was there.
Thanks to my grandad, I understand more about life in those days. Some of the time sounded very tough in the R.A.F!
