Description

Joe Cahill, 1950-51

I wasn`t there very long when the foreman came round and said, how would you like a job as a marker off. It meant three pence an hour extra, which was a big thing , you know , in those days. After a couple of days the foreman came to me and said "Joe, back to the tools". I said why, iam i not doing the job good enough? He said "oh you are, I`m delighted with your work" , he says. I says why then? he says "you kick with the wrong foot".It was an objection at me being a catholic and getting promotion. My own personal opinion is that there was alot of time wasted, with insufficient supervision, and that lack of supervision and lack of direction of work and that sort of thing lead to the downfall of the shipyard.
