The modern textile industry began in Scotland in the 18th Century. Although the woollen and textile industries were important to the Borders in the Middle Ages, centuries of war and unrest took their toll on the land. It was not until the Borders began to enjoy a period of stability following the union in 1707 that people began to see land as something they could invest in and perhaps prosper from, rather than merely as a means for survival.
