Prestwick: A Century in Flight |
|
Stewerdesses for Scottish Airlines © Scran | In the immediate post-war period a new independent airline started up using Prestwick as its main base. Scottish Airlines was to provide a Scottish based airline service flying passengers and freight to the UK, Europe and North America, continuing until 1960. Although Scottish Airlines was ultimately unsuccessful, it had shown Prestwick’s capabilities as a transatlantic gateway and the airport underwent a period of massive expansion in the 1960s.
Unfortunately, Orangefield House was not to survive the expansion of Prestwick. Despite the fame of its restaurant and hotel, the grand old building was knocked down in 1966 to allow the expansion of the runways. A new terminal building had been opened two years previously and the main runway was strengthened in 1971, allowing Prestwick to take even the giant jumbo aircraft now entering service.
