Created by Nupur Arts and the Leicester Haymarket Theatre, 'Bombay Vibes 2: A Vision of Bollywood' is marketed as a 'vision' of Bollywood dances influenced by various Indian regions and traditions. Unfortunately in was not quite the vision that I had expected.听 Throughout each of the fifteen dances it was clear that a lot of time and effort had been put into the show. Watch out Shukrukh Khan... The colourful costumes were beautifully designed to represent the message behind each dance, the choreography skillfully merged the contemporary and traditional, and the performers were all bright young, energetic and enthusiastic. The performances that stood out to me were the traditional folk and solo dances as they emphasised the elegance and beauty of Indian culture. The group dances were fun to watch drawing on a larger range of influences such as '50s Rock and Roll and bhangra. The male dancers in particular were great to watch, adding an air of wit and humour to the performances, much like a younger Shahrukh Khan.听 A school production? It was however the presentation of the show that made it less professional and more amateur. The presenter's hints to the audience to clap and cheer for the performers was entertaining at first, but felt somewhat too persistent towards the show's finale. I couldn't help but feel that I was no longer in a theatre but at a school production pieced together with a stereo and some handy lighting. Great expectations What was enjoyable to see however, was the sense of pride and enthusiasm amongst the audience that so many local children and adolescents were brought together to represent Bollywood. While watching the young performers you couldn't help but feel that you should have your own son or daughter on stage so that you could cheer and applaud their efforts. But what you really need to remember when watching this show is that it is a showcase of local talent and not a grand arts company. It is clear that Nupur Arts is an ambitious and hard working group, and with a little encouragement and support it could be something worthy of great expectations. |
