Building our future?

Is the regeneration of our city benefiting everyone? 大象传媒 Radio Leicester's BIG Debate on 'Leicester's Regeneration' took place on 21 June 2007. It was an interesting discussion, listen to The BIG Debate here...

On Thursday 21 June 大象传媒 Radio Leicester held the latest of its Big Debates. The question being discussed was whether the mass regeneration of our city will benefit us ALL.

The city of Leicester is in the middle of the three billion building work seen this generation with the new Highcross Quarter, the Performing Arts Centre and the Riverside development and these are just a few of the major regeneration projects.

The panel answering YOUR questions

The Debate

The focus of Leicester's regeneration should NOT be on Shopping, but the people who live here.

That was one of the conclusions that emerged听in the discussion on the city's future, where over one hundred people from across Leicester and Leicestershire took part.

There are apartments being built in the city, but people at the debate questioned affordable housing.

How can young people get involved in shaping the future of Leicester? This was another important area of discussion brought to the panels attention by YOU.

"The facilities created from Leicester's current regeneration should be for everyone and not just the wealthy."

Chris from New Parks

Facilities For Everyone

Concerns were raised in the regeneration debate that the gap between the rich and the poor in Leicester could become more pronounced. It was suggested the city centre will become a jewel - surrounded by a ring of poverty.

Chris from New Parks stressed how facilities should be for everyone and not just the wealthy.

The Bishop of Leicester from the panel addressed this concern by warning there could be rising tensions in the city if the poorest communities aren't considered during the latest regeneration work.
