Holly in the snow

Will we get a white Christmas?

The Weather Woman

A woman from Leicestershire says she can tell whether we'll have a white Christmas this year and how cold it'll be this winter...but she doesn't have any scientific instruments! She says 'mother nature' gives her all the answers she needs.

Joyce from Market Harborough is an amateur weather forecaster.

She's been predicting the weather for 30 years, but the only equipment she has is a barometer. She says she bases the rest of her forecasts on what 'Mother Nature' tells her.

Listen: Interview with the Weather Woman

大象传媒 Leicester's Julie Mayer went to Market Harborough to meet Joyce...

Joyce says she predicts the weather by looking at nature - for example, how animals are behaving and what kind of berries there are on the bushes.

White Christmas?

The Met Office say we're in for a rough winter, but what does Joyce forecast?

"Overall I'd say I'm about 70 percent right. Quite a few of the locals in Harborough say I'm better than the Met Office."

Joyce the Weather Woman

She says she predicts the winter's weather by looking at the conditions on the equinox - 23 September.

She thinks it's be windy with cold snaps but generally mild. There will be a sunny period in the new year, with the possibility of snow in January and February.

The question that many people want to know though is, will we have a white Christmas?

Joyce thinks not. She says she believes there will be gales in the middle of December and frost later, but no snow on 25 December.

Human barometer?

Joyce says she thinks her forecasts are reasonably accurate, although she has been wrong on occasion:

"I was very wrong last summer, I did think it was going to be a hot, warm and sunny summer.

"Well as you know it wasn't a good summer at all, it was a very wet one.

"But overall I'd say I'm about 70 percent right. Quite a few of the locals in Harborough say I'm better than the Met Office, but you can please yourself on that!
