Listen: The Eco-Town Debate

On Tuesday 17 June 2008 大象传媒 Leicester held a BIG Debate about whether there should be an "Eco-Town" in Leicestershire. Listen to the discussion in full here...

Should there be an "Eco-Town" in South Leicestershire?

This issue has got YOU talking non-stop to us here at 大象传媒 Leicester.

"Come and see the site for yourself..."

Message from opposed campaigners

大象传媒 Leicester's Big Debate on Pennbury - the proposed eco-town - discussed the local issues surrounding the plans to build an eco-town in the Stoughton area.

The debate brought all sides embroiled in the row together for the first time.

Campaigners for and against the eco-town had their say on 17 June 2008 at the Thurnby Memorial Hall, which would be very close to the proposed site.

Local people got the chance to quiz representatives of the Co-Operative Group about their bid to build up to 15 thousands new homes.

"Come and see the site for yourself" - that was the message campaigners opposed to plans for an eco-town in Leicestershire are sending to the Government.

Many different and passionate opinions were voiced, especially when YOU were asked for YOUR views. Listen to The BIG Debate in here...

Graham Ramsbotham from the Co-Operative Group says the development of eco-towns is something that needs to happen for society as a whole.

Local man Kevin Feltham, who's leading the fight against the eco-town, says the proposed site is unsustainable. However some people at the debate DID support and agree with the eco-town proposition.

Government Response

Majority of the members of the audience strongly urged the Government's Housing Minister Caroline Flint, who didn't attend the Thurnby debate, to come and visit the area and talk to those of you who live and work nearby.

大象传媒 Leicester's Chris Baxter spoke to Minister Flint the day after the Big Debate and asked her...

"When are YOU coming to see the proposed Pennbury site for yourself?

"Surely you ARE going to visit the site before making any decision on whether Pennbury gets the go-ahead?"
