Gormenghast

Step inside a shadowy world of grotesque characters, mysterious ritual and bone-chilling events. Gormenghast by the David Glass Ensemble is at Chester Gateway from 25th-27th May.

The great, gothic castle of Gormenghast, a labyrinth of chambers concealing a web of deeply hidden secrets, welcomes you inside this May. In this vast, crumbling kingdom follow a strange and lurid tale of greed, honour, madness and love.

Celebrating 15 years of national and international touring, David Glass Ensemble return with their award-winning production of Gormenghast. First staged in 1992 to critical acclaim, David Glass brings together a new ensemble of performers to recreate this dark feast of theatre.

Meet Steerpike, the pale, power-crazed kitchen boy; Titus, the timid, fine-boned rebellious heir to the corrupt castle; his sister Fuchsia, a wild, raven-haired romantic and a whole host of sinister inhabitants.

This revival marks the 60th anniversary of Peake’s Titus Groan, the first novel from The Gormenghast Trilogy, now hailed a ‘modern classic’.

David Glass is one of the founders and has been one of the foremost exponents of physical and visual theatre in the UK over the last twenty five years. His past pupils include Emma Thompson, Stephen Daldry and Simon McBurney.

He formed the David Glass Ensemble in 1989 to create powerful visual theatre. Most recently he performed in Disembodied which he created with Tom Morris.
