Metropolis: Capturing Modern Liverpool

A new photographic exhibition at the National Conservation Centre documents Liverpool鈥檚 emergence as a modern city.

Liverpool's 20th century growth in to a modern city is chronicled in a new exhibition at the National Conservation Centre.

Over 60 images from the archives of Stewart Bale Ltd, a photographic practice based in Liverpool show the major changes and development of the city from the 1930s to 1970s.

Capturing the construction of landmark buildings, cutting edge developments, great events and city life the archive reflects the change from a Victorian town to a modern city.

The photographs reflect a prosperous Victorian town transforming itself into a modern city.

Architectural projects including the Georges Dock building, Liverpool鈥檚 cathedrals plus rare views of groundbreaking engineering projects such as the Queensway Mersey tunnel and overhead railway are pictured during construction.

National Museums Liverpool Curator of Photographic Archives Anne Gleave says "Stewart Bale Ltd created a legacy of major importance, combining outstanding craftsmanship with a unique record of Liverpool鈥檚 changing face during a significant period of social and industrial change and development."

Metropolis: Capturing Modern Liverpool is at the National Conservation Centre until 10 August 2008.听听
