Memories of New Brighton

New Brighton
Open Air Baths

Just reflecting on my boyhood days spent in Liverpool in the forties.听听 What then seemed long hot summers...

听Catching the number 5 tram from Smithdown Road,听to the Pier Head on a听Sunday Morning, to catch the New Brighton ferry.听Standing in long queues on the landing stage for the New Brighton ferry.听听

It used to be so busy then with families going to New Brighton for the day, the ferry was always the old cattle boat, people would stand shoulder to shoulder on it for the journey across the Mersey. 听

We would then spend all day in New Brighton open air swimming baths. Then before the return Journey home, a walk around the old open air fair ground where the old tower stood. 听 Then there was a long wait in queues for a ferry back to Liverpool.听

I also remember the one legged man that used to dive off the pier into the river听at New Brighton for pennies听from the crowds waiting for the ferry back to Liverpool, then the tramcar back home feeling very tired.
