Hundreds of volunteers, under the direction of Robin Goddard are currently staging the Chester Mystery Plays. They are medieval dramatisations of the Bible stories which portray God's intervention into human history - good and evil, love and hate.

The Mystery Plays are an important part of social history, not only for the City of Chester but also Britain at large. They are performed only every five years, so you won't be able to see this special event again until Liverpool is Capital of Culture in 2008!

The plays are divided into two sections, 'The Prophecy' and 'The Fulfilment' on alternating nights. All the children from local schools portray the animals in a highly creative way, and there's plenty of Welsh jokes from the shepherds, whose bawdy capers provide lots of amusement!

The whole production is set to stunning music written by Musical Director Matt Baker. His rousing songs, gospel style Magnificat, and haunting melodies take the plays to a new level.

So if you fancy a summer evening in the company of some magical theatre, here's all the info you'll need:

PERFORMANCE TIMES AND TICKET INFO:

Evening performances (7.30pm) of two parts (The Prophecy and The Fufilment) will alternate on Chester Cathedral Green from Monday to Saturday, with matinees on Saturday afternoons (1.30pm). All seats (拢15 and 拢19.50) are under cover.
