Hundreds
of volunteers, under the direction of Robin Goddard are currently
staging the Chester Mystery Plays. They are medieval dramatisations
of the Bible stories which portray God's intervention into human
history - good and evil, love and hate.
The
Mystery Plays are an important part of social history, not only
for the City of Chester but also Britain at large. They are performed
only every five years, so you won't be able to see this special
event again until Liverpool is Capital of Culture in 2008!

The
plays are divided into two sections, 'The Prophecy' and 'The Fulfilment'
on alternating nights. All the children from local schools portray
the animals in a highly creative way, and there's plenty of Welsh
jokes from the shepherds, whose bawdy capers provide lots of amusement!
The
whole production is set to stunning music written by Musical Director
Matt Baker. His rousing songs, gospel style Magnificat, and haunting
melodies take the plays to a new level.
