The Shared Data Unit offers free training and support to local news partners throughout the year.
In the past two years, some 500 local journalists have taken one of its online courses in data and investigative journalism.
The interactive sessions equip journalists with the skills to find and tell stories from datasets.
We offer a varied and evolving range of classes teaching key technical skills including coding for journalists.
Testimonials
鈥淎 fantastic and enlightening week. Reckon I learned more in 5 days than 3 years at Uni.鈥
"I just want to say thanks again to the 大象传媒 team. I was really unsure what to expect, but as soon as we had the introduction I felt at ease because it was a really welcoming environment. Throughout the week I felt comfortable enough at any time to ask a question or to say I'm struggling - so thanks again for creating a light and supportive group. I would love to come back, if possible."
"I thought the course was outstanding and provided me with a whole new skills set. I've gone from being someone who's never really looked at a spreadsheet before to trying my hand at pivot tables and delving into open source data which I have no doubt will lead to finding more stories in the future."
"Practically all the sessions were perfectly pitched and, although they were challenging, they weren't too tricky! The list of training resources given to us at the end of the week was a goldmine!"
"Really enjoyed the training. Learned a lot from it and was able to build on skills and learn how to do things I had no knowledge of or wasn't able to do before. Liked the range of content and combination of how to do pivot tables, clean data etc but also how to build an investigation and the sharing of ideas and feedback. I now have a lot of different ideas for pieces I could do with data, and investigations I want to look into and how to go about this, so thank you!"
