October's set to be busy with exhibitions and festivities planned across the borough Preschool children and their parents are being taught about black history through the medium of dance, song and drama. The 'Whippersnappers' group went into the Arnott & Acorn preschool to get families in the mood in time for the official day of celebration on the 2nd November. For many the start of Black History Month celebrations began with one person - Akyaaba Addai Sebbo, who worked on the former Greater London Council in the late 1980's. The first event was held on 1st October 1987, when the GLC bought over Dr Maulana Karenga the originator of Kwanzaa in the US. Kwanzaa is a week-long holiday celebrated primarily in the United States, honouring African-American heritage. Back in Bexley, a Black History Month photographic exhibition is getting it's final touches as it prepares to open during half term. For five days local community group; Trust Thamesmead and the Gallions Housing Association will be inviting residents to come in and look at the photo's. The International day of celebrations will be marked with one community group encouraging it's children to dress in their families national clothes. The Greenmead鈥檚 Children Centre鈥檚 Parents Forum will also ask families for examples of global cuisine to be shared with others.
