‘Old is Gold’

It’s been a week of celebrations for older people in Croydon.

Zimmers got the crowd moving

Throughout the week there have been over 33 different activities aimed at celebrating the achievements of the borough’s older residents.

The events range from walks in the park, various lunches reflecting the borough’s diversity to an energetic packed day at Fairfields incorporating Tai Chi, ‘Garba’ Dance from the Gujarati Women’s Group, as well as a high octane performance from the celebrated and famous ‘Zimmers’.

Pauline French is the Director for Services for older people.Ìý She said:Ìý "This is our way of celebrating older people and what older people do for us and each other".

"It's about breaking the stereotype.ÌýÌý People have a stereotypical view of older people as being frail and being in need of help and support – very few older people are in need of that type of help.Ìý The rest are here to celebrate and to have fun.

age no barrier

Hundreds have taken part in the varied sessions all of which have been filmed in order to show those who were unable to participate what's on offer in the borough and to enable them to enjoy some of the entertainments.

For those lucky enough to have been involved it's been a time to show they may be in their 'golden' years but they are far from over.

"I've enjoyed everything, all the entertainment and I enjoyed the lunch … they're doing a great job".

Zimmers still going strong

"It's wonderful they are celebrating how much older people have to contribute".

"Today it's been quite nice, it's nice to know about other voluntary groups and what’s going on but, it would have been nice if it had been publicised even more."

If you or someone you know took part in the week’s activities – how do you think it went?Ìý Send me your comments, views or pictures.
