Work starts on new skate park

Work starts on new skate park

Skaters, listen up!

Ramps, 'blocks' and a 'street style' are coming to Bexley. Construction work has begun on a new skate park, bringing a 'much needed' facility for keen skateboarders and BMX bikers.

It's the first of its kind in the borough of Bexley, and from January 2009 skateboard enthusiasts will be the first to benefit from a grant made by the Big Lottery Fund.

The Danson Youth Centre, in Brampton Road, is working with the local council to provide the new attraction, which will also cater for BMX riders.

Beginners and experts

The new facilities won't just be for those who can already skate; beginners will be offered support and tuition, with time especially set out for those less confident on their feet.

The man in charge of the borough's youth services, praised those who first asked for a skate park to be given the go ahead.

Cllr Simon Windle said: "It is great that work on the skate park has now begun. Bexley's young people have long campaigned for this facility and we listened to them."

He added: "Having the park in the Youth Centre's grounds will allow users to enjoy being in an area uniquely created for and used by them. I am looking forward to seeing it in action.鈥

Design input

Young people were asked for their thoughts on the design of the new park, with changes made to the final scheme following their input.

Staff from the Danson Centre actively campaigned for the construction of the skate park at the centre, and once it's built will provide an 'environment that has adult supervision'.

Joy Toghill, who runs the youth centre, said: "We are very excited about the new facility."

"Young people have been asking for a facility like this for some time and with the help of Councillors and the support of local people and the Big Lottery Fund our wish has come true."

"We look forward to meeting and welcoming those that will doubtless make the park a success."

The facility, which comprises of ramps and blocks for a 'street' style course, as well as a sunken bowl, will open in January 2009.
