2012 Soapbox: Greenwich

Meet three Greenwich residents who are having their say on the role of Greenwich in the 2012 Olympic Games. Hear what they have to say and join in the discussion with your own views...

Robert Gray

Robert Gray

ROBERT GRAY

Actor Robert Gray has run his own Bed and Breakfast at Number 16, St Alfeges Passage for ten years. With the construction of the former Millennium Dome in the late 1990s, came the need for more overnight accommodation in Greenwich - and in stepped Robert.

Well known in the local community, Robert will also be able to gauge views from tourists' staying in his B&B. What do they make of Greenwich and its plans for 2012?

Robert is keen to hear what some of the boroughs younger people think about hosting the Games in 2012. To celebrate Christmas, Robert asked pupils from the John Roan School to design Olympic inspired artwork, to hang during the period of advent.

Neville Grant

NEVILLE GRANT

Writer and Blackheath resident Neville Grant says he is positive about London and Greenwich hosting the Olympics. "Now we've got them, we might as well make the most of them."

Neville edits and contributes towards the voluntary community newspaper; The Westcombe News.

Annie Hart

ANNIE HART

Local campaigner Annie Hart is no stranger to looking out for issues that affect sport and the environment. Annie and other Kidbrooke residents have worked hard to protect the Hervey Road sports field; they're worried the open space will be used to build a new Primary School.

Greenwich Council say the land was transferred to them, so long as the area was used for educational purposes.

Annie has already been to visit the Olympic site in Stratford and was impressed by the "number of rivers and canals" found on the plot.

YOUR VIEWS

I attended the Greenwich Society meeting the other week where Mr Robert Gray informed us that he had been selected by the B.B.C. as "Voice of Greenwich".听 I have watched the television every evening since then hoping to hear his words of wisdom and his insights to no avail.听 All of us in Greenwich loath the idea of the Olympics but I wish to know what Mr Gray is going to say about it.听 Come on B.B.C.

- Charles, Greenwich

I've never been an Olympics fan - in fact I've always managed to avoid any of it,听 but I reckon it'll be worth watching Olympic Soapbox just to listen to Robert Gray's take on them. He's a scream. Let's hope we see a lot more of him.

- Rosie, SE9

As a frequent visitor to Greenwich for 30 years, I am glad to have Neville Grant and the Westcombe News there to keep me informed about good news and bad out of that charming area of Greater London.

-听 Jim, Milwaukee Wisconsin, USA

I'm delighted to see that you have invited Robert Gray to be one of your voices for Greenwich. He has a great deal of down-to-earth insight, dressed up in a lot of entertaining camp. I hope he will have a lot to say about why we should not use Greenwich Park for the Olympics!

Good to see a familiar face on this page -:)听听 in Mr Robert Gray and what a great character and a unique individual he is ! So friendly and entertaining to be around and has quite an amazing history to share with his guests! I have stayed in his B&B and was given the 'guided' tour of Greenwich while there -:) I loved every minute of it and if I could get there during the Olympics听 there is no other place I would rather stay. Knowing how lovely it is I can well imagine he will be booked up long in advance - lucky those who will be there :) Anyway - hope to see more of him and just had to say my piece
