As World
Cup fever rages, footballing legend Sir Geoff Hurst leads the Queen鈥檚
Jubilee Baton Relay into England today.
Sir Geoff Hurst
who, in 1966, scored the hat trick that resulted in England鈥檚 famous
World Cup victory carries the Baton in Gloucester after the Relay
completed a four-day tour of Wales.
Sir Geoff, said
that, like the 1966 World Cup, the Manchester Commonwealth Games
will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 often have these
massive sporting events in this country, on our own doorstep. When
we do it means we don鈥檛 have to travel vast distances to experience
world class sporting events. So we should make the most of these
occasions and really get involved, support the athletes as the home
town advantage can make a huge difference and show the world we
can stage a great event.鈥
Sir Geoff, who
was born just outside Manchester, said he felt honoured to be representing
England again by carrying the Baton into Gloucester.
Other celebrity
sporting Relay Runners include Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best,
Denise Lewis, Sir Roger Bannister, Seb Coe and Steve Cram.
