A bronze
sculpture, inspired and designed exclusively by the community of
east Manchester has been unveiled by Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr
Roy Walters, at the city of Manchester Stadium.
Designed with
the help of Longsight-based artists Hetty Chapman and Karen Allerton,
the creative artwork symbolises key aspects of the area from its
past, present and future while at the same time commemorating the
Commonwealth Games.
The project
involved a number of local groups including Discus Youth Group,
Bradford Day Centre, the Homework Club and Adult IT Group at Beswick
Library and St Brigid's and The Church of the Resurrection Primary
Schools in partnership with East Manchester Community Forum, East
Manchester New Deal for Communities and Manchester 2002.
Constructed
from bronze, stainless steel and concrete, the artwork contains
messages of welcome as well as poetry, words and images that link
the area to its past, its present and the Games and its future association
with Manchester City Football Club.
The sculpture
has been installed at the main pedestrian entrance of the City of
Manchester Stadium site. Following the Commonwealth Games, it will
moved to its permanent home at Philips Park.
