Amelie at Night and Day

"Quirky, imaginative French cinema at it's best in the same mould as…" Well, that's from the advert for the film Amelie, but could equally be applied to the Knutsford (twinned with Paris) band that has adopted the name in homage.

Diminutive in stature, yet clear and powerful in delivery, guitarist/vocalist Amalie leads the band through a pot pourri of styles from county to rock and various bits in-between.

Opening number Casanova is almost Elvis like in his "huh-huh" style and, on the eve of his 70th birthday, continues to show the influence the King exerts long after his death.

In only the tenth month of their existence, Amelie have crafted a series of melodic pop songs following the traditional slow-fast-slow structure. The results are an easy on the ear commercial pop which is warmly received by the receptive crowd

From the female orientated perspective of the lyrics ("You don’t need to shave your head/To fit in with your friends") it’s a safe presumption that Amalie is the main lyricist, and she occasionally shows a neat line in acerbic put-downs that creep deceptively below the commercial audio on display.

The diversity of the set is highlighted during her ‘Rickie Lee Jones’ moment, when drums and bass are silent, and Amalie, accompanied by a lone guitarist, still holds the attention of the receptive crowd

They’re not likely to cause a riot or raise controversy, but that's not what they set out to do; their radio friendly rock is, in leaving a enjoyable feeling, just like the film.

Ian Cheetham, The Northern Quarter
I too made the mistake of thinking this was a Queer up North promotion. I think some savvy PR men had been spreading rumours! Having said that it was a great event, my partner and myself enjoying the jostling at the front and the Kyliesque Amelie giving it all!! Great tunes too and I would love to see this lady down the village for a real queer night.

I went on the undersatnding Amelie was the new gay icon and I quite ofetn feel like a fish out of water in straight venues but it wasn't like that here, although it was a straight gig I was very comfortable. The gig itself was fantastic, she has a voice to die for, as well as the looks. I was even impressed by the merchandise, I happily parted with £15 for a tour t-shirt, which went down very well on my works dress down day. Keep up the good work Amelie, your future is so bright.

John Watling, Alderley Edge
Its not often I venture into the comparatively low class Knutsford town centre but the prospect of seeing my old school friend Ammy again was too tempting to resist. I am so glad that I went. This band remind me of those sweet things The Cardigans and perhaps even more so Belle and Sebastian. Delightfully whimsical stuff, yet mature and arty at the same time. Headbangers will pretend they dont like them whilst secretly packing their little MP3 players with their music.
