Think Thrice

For the past six years, California quartet Thrice have been blazing new trails for heavy music. As they prepared to take the stage in Manchester, Alex Davies caught up with lead singer Dustin Kensrue to find out more about them.

Do you think your new album Vheissu represents a growth in you as people?

"Yeah, I think it always does, at least, for us, we just write from where we are as people, and what we鈥檙e feeling. I think it鈥檚 always influenced by how we鈥檙e growing as people, how we鈥檙e growing as a group."

It鈥檚 a new direction for you. Was it a conscious effort to do something different or a natural progression?

"It鈥檚 a little of both. We always wanted to do something that鈥檚 a bit different and unique and interesting. At the same time though, what that is for us is trying to make something new, not just for the sake of it being new. They鈥檙e inseparable in a sense."

Over the course of your career, how has your live show evolved?

"It鈥檚 hard for me to say, because I don鈥檛 have an outside perspective on it. From watching video, we鈥檝e definitely progressed quite a bit - we鈥檝e learnt to express more naturally what the music is making us feel. I think there may have been points where we may have been more crazy or youthful, but I feel the way we are now, there鈥檚 no conscious effort to try and do anything in particular. When you鈥檙e starting out you have the desire to be entertaining, but I think as you play more and more shows, you fall into a natural rhythm."

Were you worried about alienating a section of your fanbase with the new album?

"I don鈥檛 want people to not like the music y鈥檏now? But at the same time, it鈥檚 not a concern that some people might not - obviously some people won鈥檛. It鈥檚 definitely self-evident that some people who liked us before won鈥檛 like the new record but I feel like a lot of people are growing with us, especially people who keep tabs on the band and know what we鈥檙e listening to, what we鈥檝e been talking about musically. I think a lot of people kind鈥檝e saw where it was going and weren鈥檛 as confused when it happened."

Are you comfortable with the sound you have at the moment or will the next record broaden it?

"I have no idea. It could go in a lot of different directions. It usually happens somewhat naturally. It鈥檚 a little early to say."
