Suburb Top Rankin!

Sounds of the Suburbs has been building up something of a fanbase out in Chorlton for its mix of top tunes and odd selections. As it launches a season of guest DJs, we asked one half of the regular vinyl spinners, Owen Rankin, to tell us more.

You're returning with some big names. Who are you most looking forward to?

Sounds of the Suburbs

  • Jez and Andy Williams of Doves will be DJing at SotS on Friday 18 August
  • The night is held at the Southern in Chorlton. Entry is 拢5
  • The coming months see Elliot Eastwick and Andy Rourke, amongst others, joining Owen and Mike at the decks

"Well, I have to be diplomatic and say that we are looking forward to each one in different ways. I think Doves will be great, because they have so much to draw from, from Hacienda classics to Northern Soul and so on, and I think it will be a great set.

"We can play the crowd-pleasers. Except for Shed Seven. And Bryan Adams. We won't play them. And we have been asked."
Owen explains the music policy for SotS

"Elliot Eastwick will be playing a proper party set, as he'll have loads of mates down because it's on his doorstep. It's all very exciting.

"They are all regulars at the night so they know what to expect and should be well up for it. We have some great names in the pipeline coming up as well that I'm very excited about, but I can't say any more."

Will you and Mike (TV, other half of the SotS team) be tailoring your own sets to those of your guests?

"Probably not, no. We will be like the holding midfielders who let the guest DJs do what they want, and we can play the crowd-pleasers. Except for Shed Seven. And Bryan Adams. We won't play them. And we have been asked."

How is a night in the suburbs different from a night in town?

"I think the best thing is walking home after and not having to queue for taxis. We get a good crowd here as well, who seem to know each other and you get a lot of people who just popped out for a quick drink and get carried away and stay out. Those are the best nights out, the ones you don't expect."

What's better - DJing or performing live?

"Live is great because you are doing a live gig and not much beats that. DJing is more social though and we get more people dancing than we do live. I don't get up and dance on the speaker stacks or get naked when I DJ. Maybe I should start."

Who would be your dream DJ to get down to SotS?

"Mike says Jacques Lu Cont and Jimmy Saville. I can't really argue with that."
