The short film sees Sam - played in the programme by John Simm - appearing from the Camberwick Green box, as the characters of the 70s animation used to at the start of each episode, and shaking his head in despair at the fact that his colleague, Gene - actor Philip Glenister in the show – is beating up a criminal in a back alley.

Life on Mars returns for its second series at the end of February. The series features John Simm as DI Sam Tyler, a time travelling detective who, after a car accident, finds himself in 1973.
