Crimeface: An interactive drama
Crimeface: An interactive drama

Crime scene

What do you get if you mix music, film, drama, literature and animation? If you鈥檙e Manchester artist Krishna Stott, the answer is simple - Crimeface, an interactive multi-platform crime drama.

Crimeface, is a new project by Krishna, the man responsible for the iconic I am Kloot video, Proof. Taking you into the shadowy world of Union City, the drama follows Tranz Van Zandt, a broody black detective with a crime to solve.

鈥淭he idea came from The Crime Scene, an earlier project I鈥檇 been involved in with Barry Adamson, a musician and soundtrack artist,鈥 says Krishna.

鈥淚 wrote the script with Richard Davis. In the early stages, we had a working version that was crossed between a film and a game but it鈥檚 much bigger now. The online version has been put together in Flash and it is a hybrid of music, literature, script, video, animation, sound and pictures.鈥

Setting the scene

The drama revolves around the main protagonist, Tranz Van Zandt, who has been recruited by Detective Harry Adams to crack computer crime.

鈥淭ranz used to work on the other side of the law, as a hacker, but has been brought into the police by Harry, who has been chasing him for years,鈥 explains Krishna.

鈥淗arry threatens to put Tranz in jail unless he joins the Modern Device Crime Unit to crack technology crime. But whilst Tranz is trying to solve a murder, he realises that Harry is far more corrupt than anyone else on the other side.鈥

The stars

The serialised drama, which was filmed on location in Manchester, stars local actor Wayne Simmonds and star of Emmerdale, David Crellin.

鈥淚鈥檝e know Wayne for years. He is a really talented actor, and we got David Crellin to play Harry Adams. I first saw him in TV show The Cops and was amazed by his performance,鈥 says Krishna.

鈥淲e鈥檝e also got Tom Charnock, who starred in Ken Loach鈥檚 film The Wind That Shakes The Barley, and Juliet Ellis, who is starring in Loach鈥檚 latest film These Times.

The mystery

The interactivity allows people to get involved with the drama, exploring the background of the story.听

鈥淎 lot of the back story is made by creating fake documents from Union City Police," says Krishna.

"It's got a layered narrative and the deeper you go into it, the more gems you find. Extra videos and clues are there to uncover a bigger story coming down on Tranz and Harry."
