Clayton quake

A minor earthquake hit Manchester [Fri 10 August] with its epicentre in Clayton to the east of the city centre. The tremor was certainly felt by many people. So tell us: did the earth move for you?

The epicentre of the quake occurred at Clayton Street in Clayton, but Manchester city centre, Reddish, Didsbury, Failsworth and Denton were all affected by the tremor that recorded 2.5 on the Richter Scale.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) says tremors like these are not uncommon in Britain and the quake this morning was actually 130 times smaller than the one that hit the city in 2002.

No damage or injuries were caused by the minor tremor but, for some people in Manchester, the quake did not go unnoticed.

Daniel Sheppard in Stockport:

"We work in an office on Petersgate near Stockport centre and felt the quake strongly.听 We knew it was the quake because we had the exact time as someone received a mobile message at the same time."

Christine Barber in Manchester:

"I work at the MRI hospital on Oxford Road and just felt what we feel could have been an earthquake. Have you heard anything from anyone else? A few desks and other things shook."

Paddy in Withington:

"Do you have any evidence of an earthquake in Withington at about noon today? Both my wife and I experienced it - but we can't find anyone to confirm it. Apparently it wasn't felt in Didsbury!"

Tim Pearson on Oxford Rd, Manchester:

"We felt our office on Oxford Road shake, as did my partner who works in East Manchester. Was there an earth tremor this morning?"

Our office felt it on Princess Street. Thought it was probably just something heavy going past until I asked my partner down the road on Dover Street and she'd felt it too.

Tony Robinson
I felt it in withington, while sat down just one jolt of the house.Thought i was going potty till i heard someone on the radio.

Chris in Withington
I'm on the second floor and my computer desk and shelves lurched for a moment, it reminded me of what happened in 2002 so started to quiz friends online who could feel it in the city centre. Couldn't find anything to confirm it was a quake.

Richard
We felt this in our office, based in Princess Street.Wasn't there another one shortly after?

I work in Guide Bridge, and felt the floor shake, and the building "creak", along with some other people around me.

I was just going down the lift to my apartment at The Green Quarter in the City Centre as the earthquake struck. The lift was shaking and swaying from side to side, it carried on for approxiamtely 3 seconds. My flatmate cried like a little girl.
