Urban Screen in All Saints' Park

Screening the city

It may all seem a bit Blade Runner, but in the future, we鈥檙e going to be watching more and more art and films in the open air on big screens. Well, we are if Urban Screens has anything to do with it.

Urban Screens Manchester is a ground-breaking four-day programme of free outdoor screen art and events; a showcase for the creative future of our cities featuring the work of over 80 international artists.

Three giant LED screens in the city centre will show a range of individual films curated for outdoor sites from as far afield as Toronto, Melbourne, Dallas and Istanbul, while a programme of international and UK premieres will entertain both the people of Manchester and the hundreds of international filmmakers, artists, designers, computer programmers, architects and media gurus converging on the city to investigate the future of outdoor media.

But why Manchester? Well, it was the world ' s first industrial city and, as such, has always harboured a spirit of enterprise and innovation. And watching things in an urban setting isn鈥檛 anything new to the city. After all, it was the first city to get a 大象传媒 Big Screen, back in 2003.

True Fictions: New Adventures in Folklore

True Fictions: New Adventures in Folklore

Something old, something new

So what鈥檚 on offer? How about the European Premiere of True Fictions: New Adventures in Folklore by acclaimed British VJ ' s ,The Light Surgeons.

Masters of the audio-visual-light spectacular, this one-off performance has limited tickets available and will take place in the spectacular surroundings of The Great Hall; a gothic cavern within Manchester Town Hall that will become the multi-screen stage for this interpretation of myth, mystery and the American icon that is Uncle Sam Wilson.

Or join A Wall is a Screen, which is part guided tour, part film night. It鈥檚 a twilight event that leads an audience Pied Piper fashion through the streets of Manchester, pausing to project quirky films upon random surfaces before loading up the equipment onto a handcart and moving on.

Or there鈥檚 MegaPhone, a means of using your phone to participate in a live, multi-player game for big screens in public spaces. Users call a local number and take control on any phone across any network. Hot from the MTV Screen in Times Square, New York, you can be among the first in the UK to take part!

DIY Ballroom

DIY Ballroom

And if none of that takes your fancy, there鈥檚 always live, flashmob dance event DIY Ballroom, an interactive-jam by Chinese duo 8GG, and Buffer Zone, which secures a live video link to a secret location in France where immigrants gather to attempt to cross through the Channel Tunnel.听

Most of it is free and it鈥檚 a case of just turning up to take part (although for The Light Surgeons, you鈥檒ll need a ticket). For more details, visit the Urban Screens website or pick up a brochure from one of many points across the city, including Cornerhouse and 大象传媒 Manchester reception.

Manchester Urban Screens takes place between Thursday 11 and Sunday 14 October.
