Stomp

Stomp at The Lowry

What’s a show without words, music or song? It is a rollicking, rhythmic stomp.

A lone guy with a broom finds a rhythm, and before we can tap along, he and his work-mates are playing out the beats of every-day human battles with a super-human force. The tools of their trade are brooms, bins, water bottles and other street junk that become pure energy in the artful hands of the performers.

Whether it is competing for the spotlight, someone’s affections or you just wanting a little time alone, the group dynamics are instantly recognisable. But the unique idiosyncrasies and playful antics of each member are full of surprises and it is not long before the show has captured the beating hearts of the audience themselves.

One show-stopper – a little less talented and lacking in street-cred, was consistently shoved out of the group. But he had fighting spirit and plenty of encouragement from the audience. His comedic awkwardness also served to remind us just how skilful and disciplined the other performers were, despite them making it appear so fluid and natural.

Boasting a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, it was pure, feet-tapping magic. Who would have thought so much fun could be had with a kitchen sink?

Stomp performers now beat, swoosh, pop and bang all over the world. The eight characters that stomped into Salford brought their own unique flavour. This along with the vivid imagination of the creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas guaranteed people were dancing to the beat of their own drum – or bin - all the way home.

Stomp runs at the Lowry until Saturday 2 February.
