Munich: A pilgrimage

David Alley from Manchester is just one of hundreds of Manchester United fans who made their way to Munich to pay their respects at the crash site on Wednesday. He kept a diary of his experiences for us….Here’s how he felt along the way…

Anticipation – Tuesday 5 February 2008

We set off for Manchester airport at 05.30 to catch our flight to Zurich. I'm feeling tense. A few other fans met us at the airport - they're carrying memorial pictures and flowers. People are flying via Frankfurt, Prague and Amsterdam! It seems like people want to get to Munich any which way they can. We all agree to meet at Burger King at Hauptbahnhof station at 19.30. We arrive in Munich, tired after a long day’s travelling - and make our way to the Hotel Ludwig.

Commemoration – Wednesday 6 February 2008

My girlfriend and I decide to leave for Trudering, where the disaster happened, early doors at 09.30. We both feel an air of sadness. There's hardly anyone around when we get there. We reach the memorial plaque, where we erect my “Mancs on Tour Flag” on a fence behind the plaque. We go over to view the memorial, feeling a sense of sadness. People arrive around 1300 - most wearing colours, roses and bringing their own mementos. Just after two o'clock the mayor of Munich; a delegation from Trudering and a party of young children from FC Bayern Munich, including Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Chairman of Bayern) arrive. A Catholic priest and aGerman clergyman give us a fantastically touching service! There are lots of tears. A lot of people stay around to mark the original time of the disaster at 16.03. Thank you Munich for looking after our heroes!

United back home – Thursday 7 February 2008

We leave Munich at 06.00 to catch our flight to Zurich. We see lots of old friends on route who've also made the pilgrimage. We had an added bonus in that Ronaldo and Nani were on our flight to Manchester. They were more than happy to sign autographs and have photos taken. We all enjoyed our trip, but I was very annoyed that Manchester United didn't send a representative.
