Peter
- soul brother at 10 years old!

Numbers
were down on the expected when clubbing visited 51st State on Saturday
night, but despite a concrete dancefloor and no air-con, the punters
were determined to have a good time.
There
was a fair sprinkling of young things but the majority of the dancers
were 40 plus and their reluctance to shake a leg during the early
spots could have been because they were saving themselves! But once
the night got going the floor was packed and you could hardly breathe
for the clouds of talcum powder!
The
dance floor was packed!

Several
of the original soulsters can still pull a mean spin and one or
two even dug out their circle skirts and bags. The music was strictly
original Wigan Casino and despite the fact that most of it came
from CDs - sacrilege to collectors - when the real vinyl did get
spun the crackle and hiss was a welcome reminder of what this scene
is really all about.
But
most people had come for one reason and the highlight of the evening
was the live PA by singers Dean Parrish and Tommy Hunt whose arrival
on stage was met with almost reverential greeting.
Clubbing had gone to its bed by the time they took the stage but
reports back say that neither artist has lost their finesse and
that Dean Parrish just gets better and better! And incidentally
reports that Dean will be appearing later on in the year at other
venues are incorrect - Dean is not due back until January 2004
- so Northern fans watch this space for exclusive details!
Sunday
was broadcast live on Radio 2 and despite a depleted attendance
promoter Russ Winstanley heralded the weekend a massive success!
Here's
what some of his punters thought:
Helen
from Parbold :
God it's good to be here I haven't been anywhere for a long time
and it's great to see the old faces...magic!
John
from Liverpool :
It's odd being in a modern club like this for a Northern event but
it's great to see everyone and have a good dance.
Gemma
from Manchester :
I love Northern Soul and I got into it because of my mum and dad
the music's so much better than the stuff in the charts - I'd love
to be able to collect the records but I've got no chance they're
too expensive!
Alan
(her boyfriend) :
God knows what I'm doing here it's like being in some wierd movie
but I do appreciate the music...real singers...cool stuff!
Harry
from York :
My feet are killing me and I've got cramp but sorry I'm off to dance!
