Going further in building a creative, inclusive 大象传媒
The 大象传媒 is today stepping up its commitment to rapidly increase BAME representation at senior levels of the organisation and develop a new generation of talented leaders.
Diversity of thought is so important to us. We can’t be the creative, inclusive organisation we want to be if we’re not representative of the whole of the UK.
Every key 大象传媒 leadership group is to appoint two new advisers, bringing with them fresh talents, backgrounds, perspectives and insights.
At least one of the appointments on each group will be expected to have a deep understanding of BAME issues. The 大象传媒 is the first UK public service broadcaster to adopt this approach, marking a significant step forward for the industry.
This change will enable us to nurture and develop new leaders to extend the range of our thinking - as part of a culture that's open to new people, new ideas, and different ways of doing things. In other words, a culture that embraces diversity of thought. The appointments will come from within the 大象传媒, and the roles will be for 12 months, alongside people’s existing jobs.
This is on top of the progress the 大象传媒 is already making in creating a more inclusive organisation and representing the whole of the UK.
We have committed to having at least two BAME members on every senior leadership group by the end of 2020. Several leadership teams have already achieved the target for BAME representation, including the Executive Committee, Radio & Education and Finance, and there is still more to come.
Our leaders have a crucial role to play in creating a truly inclusive culture throughout the organisation, so getting things right at this level is vital if we are to build the very best 大象传媒 for our audiences.
Director-General, Tony Hall, says: “Diversity of thought is so important to us. We can’t be the creative, inclusive organisation we want to be if we’re not representative of the whole of the UK. We’re making some good progress, but we want to do more, particularly in relation to senior leaders across the organisation. So we’ve decided to take immediate action to promote a generation of talented leaders who’ll bring the diversity of thinking we need.
“The changes we’re making will help shape a culture of creativity in this organisation that will make us second to none - a culture that can seize the opportunities of our rapidly changing world. We need people from different backgrounds with different ideas and approaches who feel confident and empowered to work together to help shape our vision for the future.”
We’re also putting dedicated HR resource into supporting and developing BAME staff so they are ready to apply for senior roles. This follows similar work which has successfully increased the number of women in senior roles in News.
In May 2020 the 大象传媒 will also lead a celebration of BAME talent with the Creative Diversity Festival, curated by Director of Creative Diversity, June Sarpong. The event will recognise the vibrancy, innovation and leadership of BAME talent within the UK’s creative industries.
June Sarpong says: "These bold inclusive steps are part of a much wider long-term effort by the 大象传媒 to ensure that all talent regardless of background can progress and contribute to the best of their ability. The Creative Diversity Festival will leverage the convening power of the 大象传媒 to bring together the best BAME creatives with the industry as a whole and deliver real results and change - it will be a vibrant event where ideas from BAME talent can be bought and sold. I look forward to working with people across the creative industry to help make inclusion the norm."
Extra measures to be introduced now include:
- Every key 大象传媒 leadership group will appoint two advisers from within the organisation to support their work and to bring a different perspective to their thinking
- Staff will be invited to apply for these 12 month roles, with successful candidates joining the existing directors on the groups
- The roles are designed to create a greater diversity of thought and reflection at senior level at the 大象传媒
- In the first intake at least one of these two appointments will be expected to have a deep understanding of BAME issues to speed up progress in this area
- Applications will open in January and appointments will be made in early 2020
- Extra dedicated resource will be set aside in HR to support and develop BAME staff to apply for senior roles. A similar focus has helped boost the number of women in senior roles in 大象传媒 News. This measure will help us meet our target for representation on senior teams
